Introduction to Psychology (4 Credits) PSY 140.10, Fall 2011 Semester Fridays 9a-12:52p, McDivitt Hall, Rm. 218 ____________________________________________________________ Contact Information: Instructor: Antoinette M. Crocilla, M.A. (Professor C) Phone: (517) 499-0991 (Emergencies only please) E-mail: [email protected] Office/Hours: By Appointment Course Description: This course will provide an overview of the interesting field of psychology, including the intricate world of psychological science, psychological theory, mental disorders, and therapeutic encounters. The material is applicable to nearly any occupation or life event that you can think of and can be useful in your personal growth and development. Course Goals: • To teach you to start asking the WHYs? and the HOWs? of what you see and hear • To create an open space for mental exploration and learning in order to facilitate a personal and experiential learning experience through psychological coursework. • To instill the biological, psychological, and social ways that mental and physical behaviors can be studied and influenced. Required Text: Myers, D. G. (2010). Psychology. (9th Ed.). New York, NY: Worth Publishers. *Please have all readings done prior to coming to our scheduled class meetings to facilitate discussion and allow for application of the material. Lectures are given in conjunction with the readings, but I will cover much more information in class than the readings provide. Our class website can be found at http://jetnet.jccmi.edu/ I will post the syllabus and possibly extra resources, handouts, etc. that are relevant. I will let you know in class if I have posted anything. Assignments: Weekly Reflection Journals: Topics will be provided each week based on the presented lecture. Students are to write a 1-2 page paper that reflects on the given topic. These journals are an opportunity for you to review the material and apply it to a real life example: Yourself. Make these journals relevant so you learn something about yourself or others. This should be an opportunity for mental growth through thinking and writing. “Thinking is a process of gathering words and holding them before us, focusing on what is in us, taking to heart what captivates us, what stands out as thought or question, so that we may discover the nature and truth of what is and what is not” for each of us individually (Moustakas, 1995, p. 62). Translate this “thinking” into your writings on the provided topics to enjoy a process of self-discovery through self-reflection that creates a deeper level of meaning for you.I think it would be great for our class cohesion if a few of you shared your thoughts in class. I will ask for volunteers, but it is not required. If you are not in attendance for class, the journals are due regardless. Please have them e-mailed to my JCC email address by 1:00 p the day of class. Journal topics are given out at the end of lecture. It is your responsibility to retrieve this information. Quizzes: These will occur at the beginning of class after any questions, comments, or concerns from the previous week’s lecture have been addressed and the journals are turned in. There are 14 quizzes in total, and I will drop the one with the lowest grade. There will be 20m allowed per quiz. If you are late to class and quizzes have started, you have the remainder of that 20m to complete it or you can opt to have that quiz be the one you drop. When you are finished with your quiz, please sit quietly or leave the room, but be cognizant of the time. I will begin lecture promptly after the quizzes are handed in. Quizzes will be returned to you the following week with grades and comments. Questions regarding that quiz can be handled at that time. Course Points/Grading Scale Weekly Quizzes: 14 Total at 20 pts (13 counted) = 260 pts Weekly Reflection Journals: 14 Total at 5 pts = 70 pts Attendance = 15 pts (Can miss 1 class without a deduction) Participation = 15 pts (Can miss 1 class without a deduction) Possible Course Points = 360 Grading Scale A = 360-322 4.0 = 94-100% 2.0 = 72-77% B = 321-285 3.5 = 89-93% 1.5 = 66-71% C = 284-249 3.0 = 84-88% 1.0 = 60=65% D = 248-213 2.5 = 78-83% 0.5 = 55-59% F = 212-0 2.0 = 72-77% 0.0 = 0-54% Incompletes: The “I” grade will be considered when the student’s work is sufficient in quality but not quantity. It is based upon 75% attendance, quality work as determined by the instructor, and a sufficient reason not to complete the course. An “I” grade may be removed by completing the course requirements prior to the end of the next semester. If the necessary work is not completed on time, the “I” grade will remain on the student’s transcript as a permanent grade. Withdrawals: The “W” grade is awarded to students who decide to withdraw from the course prior to the end of the semester. You, the student, must officially withdraw by completing a withdrawal form on or before the official withdrawal date.
