Auditorium Dance Bldg. 307 542-2338/[email protected] Dance Appreciation Course Syllabus It is the responsibility of each student to read and understand the information in this syllabus. Course Description: This course will provide an introduction to aspects of dance as cultural, spiritual, and aesthetic expression, exploring origins and the related roles of the dancer, choreographer, and spectator. Historical and critical readings, video-illustrated lectures by the instructor and participation in dance experiences during class time will acquaint the student with masterpieces of dance theatre art and develop the student’s responsiveness to dance. Text and References: Dancing, Gerald Jonas Learning About Dance, Nora Ambrosia Handouts may also be given during the semester. Course Objectives: 1. The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the art of dance which will aid in an understanding and appreciation of dance in its various forms and styles. 2. Students will learn a brief history of dance in society and culture. 3. Students will have the opportunity to observe many different dance styles from around the world. Viewing dance is an essential part of this course. 4. Students will learn about dance through participation in several dance-movement experiences during the semester. The participatory experiences will be in a variety of dance forms. 5. Students will view live dance performances and present their responses to one of these performances in a written critique. (list of performances at end of syllabus) Content Outline: Discussion about the definition of dance Make a list of different functions of dance View dance in different cultures (on video) Discuss the earliest forms of dance Participate in dance-movement experiences Discuss history of dance in Western and non-Western cultures More dance on video Twentieth Century dance - history, video and movement experiences Making dances Instructional Activities: Lectures, reading assignments, videos of dance performances, participation in movement experience classes, attending live dance performancesParticipatory and Performance Experiences: • There will be several participatory experiences during the semester. Students will be asked to wear loose fitting clothing in which they can move. Sweat pants and warm-ups are acceptable. Bringing clothes to change into after class is recommended. • Students are required to attend 3 live dance performances during the semester. 1. TWO dance performances of the required 3, MUST BE DANCE DEPARTMENT PRODUCTIONS (listed at end of syllabus). 2. Proof of attendance will be a torn ticket stub stapled to the program. Write your name on the front. You must have the ticket with your signed name on it, to receive credit for attending. 3. Ticket stubs will be due within one week after the performance attended. These can be turned in to the instructor or delivered to the instructor’s mailbox in the Dance Department. Stubs turned in later than 7 days after the performance date will not be accepted. Attendance Policy: 1. Attendance is an important factor in the course and is necessary in order experience all of the different elements of the course. 2. If a class is missed, it is the student’s responsibility to get the information from the day missed. Course materials including lectures, videos, and handouts will not be repeated or given later. 3. Class will begin at 11:05am. If you are not in the classroom when your name is called for attendance, you will be counted absent. 4. After 2 absences, ten points will be taken off the final grade for every absence. Students who have perfect attendance at the end of the semester will receive an additional 10 points added to the final grade. 4. It is not necessary to turn in doctor’s notes, health center notes or other excuses. No excuses will be considered for the extra attendance points. Other Requirements and Policies: 1. There will be 2 examinations given during the semester and a final exam. These tests will cover material from class notes, reading assignments from hand-outs, dance performances shown in class and dance experiences from class. 2. Reading assignments will be given during the semester. Students are responsible for the material covered in these assignments. 3. A group project will be given the last week of classes. Students will turn in a written paper discussing their contribution to the group project. There are no excused absences from the group project. If you miss the day of the group project, you will receive a zero for that part of the course. THERE IS NO MAKE-UP FOR THIS PROJECT. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. 4. Students are required to attend 3 live dance performances during the semester. A list of these performances will be provided. Students are required to write a critique of ONE performance. Guidelines for the critiques will be handed out with this syllabus. 5. All written work (critiques and group projects) must be typed and double-spaced.Academic Honesty and Plagiarism: It is each student’s responsibility to be aware of and follow the policy on academic honesty at UGA. This includes honesty with regard to exams, papers and attending performances. All academic work must meet the standards contained in “A Culture of Honesty”. Each student in responsible to inform themselves about those standards before performing any academic work. A full version of “A Culture of Honesty” can be found at http://www.uga.edu/~vpaa. Grading: 3 exams @ 100 pts. each (Sept. 22, Oct. 25,)* final exam Dec. 13th, 12:00-3:00pm) 300 pts. 3 performances attended @ 25 pts. each 75 pts. 1 written critique of a dance performance (April 14th) 25 pts. Group Project (participation & paper) 50 pts. Total 450 pts. Grading Scale – 90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, below 69% = failure of the course *The instructor reserves the right to change
