Course Schedule: This course will meet Thursdays from 7:00pm-9:45pm in JH 1123. Textbook: The textbook for this course is Principles of Economics (3rd Edition) by Robert H. Frank and Ben S. Bernanke. Topics to be Covered: The course will closely follow the textbook. We intend to cover materials from the following chapters: Chapter 1 (Thinking Like an Economist) Chapter 2 (Comparative Advantage: The Basis for Exchange) Chapter 3 (Supply and Demand: An Introduction) Chapter 4 (Elasticity) Chapter 5 (Demand: The Benefit Side of the Market) Chapter 6 (Perfectly Competitive Supply: The Cost Side of the Market) Chapter 7 (Efficiency and Exchange) Chapter 8 (The Quest for Profit and the Invisible Hand) Chapter 10 (Monopoly and Other Forms of Imperfect Competition) Chapter 11 (Strategic Choice in Oligopoly, Monopolistic Competition, and Everyday Life) Chapter 17 (Macroeconomics: The Bird’s Eye View of the Economy) Chapter 18 (Measuring Economic Activity: GDP and Unemployment) Chapter 19 (Measuring the Price Level and Inflation) Course Requirements and Grading Criteria: A total of three exams will be given. The first exam (“Exam 1”) will be on Thursday 3/15/07; the second exam (“Exam 2”) will be on Thursday 5/10/07. A cumulative final exam (“Final Exam”) will be given on Thursday 5/24/07 from 8:00pm-10:00pm. You are not allowed to use any notes or books during any of the exams. The exams will not require calculation beyond what you can accomplish on a basic scientific calculator. Thus, you are not allowed to use a graphing calculator or a calculator with any “memory” or “storage” capabilities (e.g., you may not use a PDA, electronic organizer, or cellular phone as a calculator) during any of the exams. Throughout the semester you will be assigned a series of web based problem sets which can be accessed through the Aplia website (http://www.aplia.com). Your two lowest graded Aplia assignments will be “dropped.”Your semester average will be computed as follows: Aplia Assignments: 15% Exam #1: 25% Exam #2: 25% Final Exam: 35% A grade of zero will be assigned for any requirement that you choose not to satisfy. For any student with a justifiable reason for missing either Exam #1 or Exam #2, the corresponding weight will be added to the cumulative final exam. In order to receive this consideration, you must obtain verification from me within seven days of the missed exam. All requests for re-grades must be submitted within seven days of when the graded assignment has been returned to you. If submitted for re-grading, I reserve the right to re-grade the entire assignment. After calculating your semester average as above, your letter grade for the course will be determined by your absolute performance in the course as well as your standing relative to other students. When assigning semester grades, “plus/minus grading” will be used. Drop Policy: The University drop policy will be followed in this class. Add and drop policies are listed in the “CSUN Schedule of Classes Spring 2007” in the section “Change in Academic Schedule after Start of Classes” (page 12). To withdraw from a class you must do so online through SOLAR, no later than Friday, 2/16/07. If you fail to attend and do not formally drop a class, a “WU” (the equivalent of an “F”) will be recorded. Policy on Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated in this class. University rules prohibit cheating, fabrication, facilitating the academic dishonesty of another student, and plagiarism. If you engage in any of these activities in this class, you will fail this class. A letter will be sent to the appropriate campus officials requesting disciplinary action. University rules on Academic Dishonesty will be strictly enforced: “Cheating or plagiarism in connection with an academic program at a campus is listed in Section 41301, Title V, California Code of Regulations, as an offense for which a student may be expelled, suspended or given a less severe disciplinary sanction.” (2006-2008 CSUN Catalog, pages 536-538). Other Notes: Materials (problem sets and exams) from my ECON 500 classes from previous semesters are available online at http://www.csun.edu/~tmathews/PreviousEcon500.html. Any changes to the procedures in this syllabus (while not anticipated) will be announced in class and on the course webpage
