Your Name _________________________________ Linguistics 103 Hayes/Lefkowitz General Phonetics Fall 2013 Homework #2: English Phonetic Transcription Due in class Mon. 10/14 Get on the Internet and go to: http://www.linguistics.ucla.edu/people/hayes/103/BroadTranscription. You will find there a page of sound files. These are .wav files, which can be played on virtually any computer. If you find your computer doesn’t play them, I suggest you download a player, following directions in the immediately following footnote. 1 If all is going smoothly, the files will simply play when you click on them. But you may find that instead, your software for playing files will pop up on the screen. This will slow you down, but only by a little. Click the Play button on this software (it usually looks like the Play button on a tape recorder). If you can’t locate an interface with a Play button on your computer screen, try minimizing the browser window (it might be lurking underneath). Some players will repeat the material over and over if you like; on the Windows Media Player this choice is under the Play menu. I strongly recommend that you use headphones to listen to the sounds. Transcription is hard, and transcription with crummy sound quality is harder. Problem Directions This exercise covers a broad transcription style for English words and English-like nonsense forms. Use only the symbols on the consonant and vowel charts for these transcriptions, which may be downloaded (if you missed them in class) from http://www.linguistics.ucla.edu/people/hayes/103/Charts/ChartsForEnglishBroadTranscription.pdf. You may use [ə] for all reduced vowel qualities or you may use both [ə] and [ɪ] for reduced vowels. There are some cases with [θ] vs. [f] that are super hard without lip reading being available. We won’t take off for errors on these. 1 For Windows, one program that works ok is the Windows Media Player, at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology=. I don’t know much about Macs, but one possibility is WinAmp, from http://www.winamp.com/. For both Windows and Mac, there are many other players. Obviously, many UCLA students know a lot about digital audio, so you’re likely to have good luck simply asking the people around you.Linguistics 103 Homework #2: English Phonetic Transcription p. 2 I.
