Must have convenient and reliable internet access. SUPPLEMENTAL READINGS: All content and supplemental reading for the semester will be available via links to these readings on eCampus. The supplemental readings may cover current events, content related reading and interesting related information. PREREQUISITE: The following must be met: (1) Developmental Reading 0093 or English as a Second Language (ESOL) 0044 or have met the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Reading Standard AND (2) Developmental Writing in 0093, or English as a Second Language (ESOL) 0054 or have met the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Writing Standard. COURSE DESCRIPTION: GOVT 2301 American Government This course is an introduction to the study of political science. Topics include the origin and development of constitutional democracy (United States and Texas), federalism and intergovernmental relations, local governmental relations, local government, parties, politics, and political behavior. (To ensure transferability, students should plan to take both Government 2301 and 2302 within the DCCC.) (3 Lec.) COMPETENCIES AND OBJECTIVES: Core curriculum competencies for GOVT 2301 and 2302: 1. Computer literacy2012 SP GOVT 2301 4010 4013 2 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES & EXEMPLARY EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES FOR GOVT 2301 AND 2302: 1. To comprehend the origins and evolution of the U.S. and Texas political systems with a focus on the growth of political institutions and the constitutions of the U.S. and Texas, federalism, civil liberties and civil, and human rights. 2. To understand the evolution and current role of U.S. in the world. 3. To recognize and assume one‘s responsibility as a citizen in a democratic society by learning to think for oneself, by engaging in public discourse, and by obtaining information through the news media and other appropriate information sources about politics and public policy. 4. To analyze, critically assess, and develop creative solutions to public policy problems. 5. To identify and understand differences and commonalties within diverse cultures. 6. To analyze the effects of historical, social, political, economic, cultural, and global forces on the area under study. 7. To develop and communicate alternative explanations or solutions for contemporary social issues. COMMUNICATION I know it can seem difficult (and maybe even a bit intimidating) to contact your professor. I hope that it won‘t be as difficult by the end of the semester. The range of assignments using eCampus will include textbook materials, discussion board, PowerPoint presentations, watching videos, taking practice quizzes, takings tests, and downloading your instructions on assignments, and submitting your assignments to me. If you do not have a computer at home to work on, please go to the Computer Labs on campus this week in L-108 or locate another computer you can use off-campus. Possible sites might be your local library, internet cafe, or at a friend's house. Grades, readings, instructor notes, tests, presentations, assignments, and more will be available on eCampus. It is your responsibility to become familiar with eCampus and use it regularly. Since exams will be given on eCampus, it is essential that you become familiar with eCampus early in the course. ***The computer lab on the Eastfield campus is located in L-108.*** Email - You are required to have an email address in order to enjoy full participation in this class. You will be asked to provide an email address on eCampus. If you do not already have an email address you can request one free of charge from the Dallas County Community College District.
