SP.747 Final Project Stephanie Wu May 17, 2007 Motivation As a photographer with an avid curiosity for Photoshop, I chose to create my final project digitally with a combination of digital images stylized in Photoshop. Over spring break this year, a group of my closest friends and I went to Puerto Rico. The vibrant colors and beautiful nature of the area inspired me to choose the trip as the theme of my final project. However, what caught my interest the most were the waves, particularly the movement of the water. With my images, I wanted to capture the beauty of the waves, both in its serenity and in its energy. Also, as a graduating senior, I wanted to create a final project to commemorate my friendships. Hence, my project features my friends and is attributed with a reminiscent mood and contemplative tone. To highlight the movement of the waves, after stylizing it in Photoshop, I kept the water in color but changed the people in the images to be monochrome. I wanted to keep the color scheme simple so I made an effort not to bombard the viewer with too many colors. As a series of three images, each image is intentionally complete on its own. Yet, each image depends on the others as a series to present the viewer with a holistic landscape. Connecting the three images together, the water moves through one image to the next and down to the last. Starting from the image to the left, the wave coming from the left crests to the right and flows onto the middle image. The middle image, which has water flowing at the top, then flows into the last image. The last image ends with rocks at the bottom of the image to anchor the movements and create finality to the flow. Techniques There were two major techniques I employed: glowing edges and layers. First, I took my water image and stylized it with the glowing edges feature in Photoshop (Exhibit 1). Then, I took my people image and changed the mode to grayscale (Exhibit 2). Next, I added the people image as a layer in the water image, transformed the scale, placed it where I thought it was visually appeasing, reduced the opacity, and erased the edges so to blend the images together (Exhibit 3).Exhibit 2: Exhibit 3: Exhibit
