Due to the abbreviated nature of this course, no more than 1 unexcused absence will be permitted. From the second absence on, student grade will be lowered by one letter grade for each successive absence. [Illness, emergency, etc. will not be counted as an absence, but must be communicated to the instructor]Grading Scale:90 – 100 = A80 – 89 = B70 – 79 = C60 – 69 = DBELOW 60 = FAssignments Counted in Grade:Midterm Exam (0nline) 20%Final Exam Part I (Online) 20%Final Exam Part II (In Class) 10%Participation Portfolio 50% Total 100%1- Group and Individual notes / responses (30)- Live Performance / Event Report (10)- Film Report (10)SJDC Stockton Campus Summer Session IClassroom Participation PortfolioThe participation portfolio grade will be comprised of an accumulation of in-class work; including but not limited to group work notes, individual notes and responses. Included in the participation portfolio will also be your live performance report and film report. Non-attendance will adversely affect your grade.Live Performance / Film ReportsThe reports are to be two to three page double space reports, which include the following elements:- Summary of experience from live event attended (Play, opera, professional sporting event, etc.) or the film that you went to see. Within the summary is not only a brief description of the story-line, but also what you experienced when you were there. A big part of the learning experience in the humanities is to understand how people interact with one another as well as the performers / athletes / actors, etc. - Include details such as date, time, type of event. Do not assume that the instructor knows what the event or film is just by the title.- Compare experience with what you have studied in the textbook and heard during the lectures. Highlight similarities and differences to cultural descriptions; for example, if you go to a movie, simply compare this to what the book says about genre, etc. Original thought is rewarded, so you are encouraged to respond thoughtfully and give as much personal opinion as possible. - Remember that this is an academic paper, so try as much as possible to refrain from first personvoice such as “I” or “Me”. EXAMINATIONSThere will be a midterm exam taken online; this will open on June 27 and close on July 1. The online portion of the final exam will open on July 10 and close on July 15. The function of the online exams is to serve as a learning device to ensure students are conversant with terms, concepts and important names that the author of the textbook presents. NB: For Information on logging onto Etudes for the online exams, please see the last page of this syllabus. The in-class final exam is simply a response by the student as to what he / she has learned over the course of study and will not be overly arduous. (Most learning, in fact, will be accomplished through in-class group work, assignments, and the reports. This is a class in which discussion and experience will be as important as memorization, likely much more so.)2SJDC Stockton Campus Summer Session ICourse OutlineJune 9 Course Introduction10 Chapter 1: You and the Humanities11 Chapter 1: You and the Humanities (Continued)Chapter 2: Myth and Origin of the Humanities12 Chapter 2: Myth and Origin of the Humanities (Continued)16 Chapter 3: Struggles of the Humanities17 Chapter 3: Struggles of the Humanities (Continued)Chapter 4: Literature18 Chapter 4: Literature (Continued)19 Chapter 5: Art23 Chapter 5: Art (Continued)Chapter 6: Music24 Chapter 6: Music (Continued)25 Chapter 7: Theater26 Chapter 7: Theater (Continued)Chapter 8: Song and Dance27 * * * Online Midterm Exam Opens for 5 Days * * *30 Chapter 8: Song and Dance (Continued)July 1 Chapter 9: Cinema2 Chapter 9: Cinema (Continued)Chapter 10: Religion3 Chapter 10: Religion (Continued)Chapter 11: Morality7 Chapter 11: Morality (Continued)8 Chapter 12: Happiness9 Chapter 12: Happiness (Continued)Chapter 13: Love10 Chapter 13: Love (Continued)Chapter 14: Death and Life-Affirmation* * * Completed Portfolios are Due * * * * * * Online Portion of Final Exam opens * * *14 Chapter 14: Death and Life-Affirmation (Continued)Chapter 15: Freedom15 Chapter 15: Freedom (Continued)16 Course Review17 * * * FINAL EXAMINATION * * * 3SJDC Stockton Campus Summer Session ILOGGING INTO ETUDES1) Open a Web Browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) to the Delta College Home Page2) Click on “Online Classes” in the left menu3) On the online classes page, click on the Etudes link (bold and blue) in the text section of that page.
