In his review, Kushman argues that even though the Disney producers wanted to present both new and enlightened messages in their film, the film contains hidden themes and messages that Kushman believes are harmful to young children. He implies that children, unlike adults, will view these messages as "truths." One example he gives is the message that ugly people are evil, ridiculous or bad because they are ugly. On the other hand, beautiful people are good because they are beautiful. Of course, the Disney producers say that they were trying to present the opposite message. They wanted children to see that Cinderella is good because she is strong and she makes the right choices. She overcomes her evil stepmother because she feels empowered to create her own destiny and not because she manages to attract the attentions of the rich and handsome prince. Your task in paper one is to identify three messages that you believe Erich Segal wants you as the reader to accept as "true" as a result of reading Love Story. Unlike Kushman, however, you will not have to judge whether these messages are good or bad, valid or invalid. You simply have to convince me that they are what Segal intended given what he wrote in the novel. However, like Kushman, you should focus on those messages or truths that are of real importance or significance. So you should look for themes that relate to class relationships, racial or religious conflicts, male-female relationships and similar subjects. You should follow your English 1A text and the English 20 grading guidelines in developing and formatting your paper. You should not try to use the course materials relating to the PW/CT models or Love Story.
