The course begins with the research methods in abnormal psychology, the diagnosis and assessment. Then we study the theoretical perspectives (biological, psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral, family systems, and socio-cultural perspectives). The emotional, behavioral, psychotic, neuropsychological and developmental disorders are discussed in depth. Not only do the students learn to understand the symptoms, prognosis, and therapies of the disorders in the DSM4, but also to gain an understanding into the legal and societal issues involved intreating people suffering from these disorders. The ethical issues pertinent for the treatment of the mentally ill (such as the trend towards de-institutionalization ) are discussed.COURSE OBJECTIVESThe students will- Acquire an understanding of the current diagnostic classification system, its advantages and limitations.- Acquire knowledge of the major classification of disorders, their symptoms and causes,and therapies.- Acquire an ability to read current research and raise questions regarding its ethics, research practices, validity, reliability, etc. - Understand the theoretical approaches in the field of abnormal psychology (behavioral, psychodynamic etc.) and their views of the disorders; how they occur, choices of treatment.- Comprehend the various psychotherapies and their techniques, their strengths and weaknesses.- Develop insight into developmental disorders of childhood and adolescence, suchas childhood depression, eating disorders, mental retardation and autism, etc.- Comprehend the societal and legal issues related to psychology, such as antisocial and violent behavior, criminal law and its impact on psychological disturbances, the patients’ rights.COURSE/INSTITUTIONAL OBJECTIVESThis course is designed to further the pre-professional career interests of students in the field of psychology, to develop students’ abilities to interpret research articles, develop analytical thinking, and evaluate information effectively. There is extensive emphasis on case studies, so that the students develop the ability to conceptualize the diagnosis, and apply theoretical knowledge to real life situations. The course is intended to foster insight into the causes, symptoms and treatments of psychological disorders.COURSE CONTENT- Abnormal behavior- historical perspective- Research methods in abnormal psychology: Diagnosis and assessment- Theoretical perspectives.1. Behavioral perspective, mechanisms of learning5. Family systems perspective, family and couple therapy 6 .sociocultural perspective, social ills, labeling, social issues- Emotional and behavioral disorders1. anxiety disorders2. dissociate and somatoform disorders3. psychological stress and physical disorders4. mood disorders5. personality disorders 6. Substance use disorders- psychotic and neuropsychological disorders1. schizophrenia and delusional disorder2. neuropsychological disorders- developmental disorders1. childhood and adolescent disorders2. issues of psychopathology, disruptive behavior disorders, antisocial adosescents, childhood anxiety and depression, ADHD,eating disorders.3. mental retardation and autism.- Antisocial personality disorder , theory and therapy Domestic Violence and child abuse- Legal issues; criminal law, patients’ rights. Examination includes midterm, final and a research paper.GRADING GUIDELINESGrades will be bases on a midterm (40%) and a final (40%) and a research paper on a relevant topic approved by instructor (20%).METHODOLOGYIn order to facilitate the students understanding of the various disorders discussed in the class lectures, there will be several films which interview actual patients diagnosed with the disorders presented.
