Guideline for Project ProposalBackgroundThere are millions of types of pollutants/industries/scenarios you can select. Describe why the problem/subject you choose is interesting and important to be investigated. Persuade and excite your reader/audience (in this case, it's Dr. Wu) that this subject instead of others deserves study and resources (e.g. your time). Don't say it's important simply because you think it's important. Dr. Wu certainly has no problems arguing back it's NOT important with millions of "I don't think it’simportant". Provide evidence (which should show in your References section and remember to cite it). Imagine yourself as a salesman. (Believe it or not, we are all salesmen, in a broad definition).ObjectivesState clearly what you want to achieve by the end of the project. The scope should be appropriate, not too big (so that you can't achieve it without 40 hours/week plus 10 full weeks of hard work) and not too small (so that nobody realize you actually have a project). Be specific so that they can be evaluated whether it's achieved at the end of the project.PlanDescribe how you are going to carry out the project. For example, where are you going to find the regulations, emission rates or meteorological data? Theremay be several tasks you have in the project. When you will finish each task is also critical so that people (and also yourself) can evaluate if you have accomplished each task on time. Thus, a timetable (i.e. key tasks on a weekly calendar) is helpful. A Gantt chart is commonly used in proposal (an example attached at the end) and can be adopted. It's important to show that your plan is practical and clear. Make sure it's not just talking or dreaming.Responsibility (for teams only)Talking about teamwork, it is not unusual no body wants to work and every body relies on other to get the work done. So, assigning each individual's responsibility will help every one to get realized what they need to do, and no confusion or argument at the end of the project. The leader of the team can also bug each individual for his progress according to the agreed upon responsibility. Think from the sponsor's viewpoint if he/she needs to pay you to do the work. Definitely the sponsor doesn't want to have a big team with only a fewpeople to work on the project while others get their pay free. So, the best way is tohave in the proposal each individual's responsibility.ReferencesThis is the section where you organize your evidences. It is important that you give credits to the source of your information (as it helps you to get a good grade). It is also how your readers can get more information, if they want to, and verify your citation, if they really doubt what you say. Don't forget to have the footnote in your text for the references you use (i.e. these references are to be used, not just for listing at the end). Refer to J. Air & Waste Management Association for the format. There should be at least 5 references for your proposal. Your textbook does not count one. The proposal should be limited to 2 pages (1.5 line spacing, 12 Times New Romans, 1 inch margin on each side, letter size paper, no hand writing). If you want to do more than 2 pages, get the approval from Dr. Wu before the submission. Otherwise, Dr. Wu will charge you the cost for spending extra time reading the 3rd page and beyond.
