Since there are 3 classes, this will assure you will get the time you need. For other times than my office hours, you need to make an appointment with me, so that it is a mutually agreeable time. Purpose The purpose of this course is to provide a general understanding of human anatomy and physiology for students in the allied health fields and to meet requirements for an Associate Degree. In addition, this class may meet the requirements of transfer students working toward a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree. Objectives General 1. To help the student to acquire knowledge of the normal development, structures, and functions of the human body. 2. To provide a science foundation for the undergraduate college and university student. 3. To provide a foundation for understanding pathology, i.e. deviations from normal anatomy and physiology Specific Students who have completed this course will be expected to: 1) Discuss the principle of homeostasis in regulating human physiology including examples of positive and negative feedback systems. 2) Demonstrate knowledge and appropriate use of anatomical nomenclature. 3) Display knowledge of the structure of eukaryotic cells, functions of cytoplasmic organelles, and membrane transport mechanisms. 4) Describe the life cycle of a eukaryotic cell.5) Demonstrate understanding of histology, including basic tissue types, their function, and location. 6) Identify the bones of the human skeleton including: anatomical location, major structures, and articulations. 7) Describe the form and function of cells found within the skeletal system. 8) Explain the details of bone development, bone growth, and bone repair. 9) Identify the anatomical location of selected skeletal muscles and specify their origin, insertion, and action. 10) Describe the structure, function, and organization of cells found in the muscular system. 11) Describe the physiological properties of skeletal muscle including excitation and contraction coupling, motor unit contraction, and metabolism. 12) Demonstrate understanding of the central and peripheral nervous systems: organization, anatomical locations, and functional properties. 13) Describe the function and form of neuroglia and neurons. 14) Discuss electrophysiological properties of nervous tissue including membrane potentials, action potentials, synaptic transmission, and activation of the neuromuscular junction. 15) Explain the effects and control of the autonomic nervous system including target organs, neurotransmitters, and receptors. Prerequisites 1. Passing score on the Reading portion of the TSI 2. CHEM 1406 (Introduction to Chemistry) or equivalent, or one semester of a more advanced Chemistry class or passing score in BIOL 0300 or passing score in BIOL 1309 (If your major does not require Chemistry, you will need to spend extra time and effort over and above your regular study time to make sure you understand everything in Chapter 5 of Get Ready for A & P and Chapter 2 of the Marieb and Hoehn text.) Required materials Marieb, E. N. and Hoehn, K. Human Anatomy & Physiology, 8th ed. WEB access to Mastering A&P (Textbook WEB site) (With textbook package or available for purchase online at www.masteringaandp.com) Hutchinson, M, Mallatt, J., Marieb, Elaine N., Wilhelm, Patricia; A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, 2nd ed. (With textbook package or available at the book store)Get Ready for A& P (With textbook package or available as an e-book on textbook website) Interactive Physiology® (With textbook package or on textbook website) PAL® (With textbook package or on text book website) Lecture Outline /Notes and Lab Manual ***If you are using the Technology Center, you will not be able to print more than 12 pages from 1 document. To print these go to http://www.southplainscollege.edu Click on Blackboard Username: (your first initial, the first 11 letters of your last name, and the last 4 digits of your student ID number) Password: Campus Connect PIN (If your PIN number starts with a zero, drop the zero when entering your password) [You can change your MySPC password (SPC domain password). Use the Options button in OWA. https://owa.southplainscollege.edu] Under Quick Links, click on +My Courses Click on the BIOL 2401 and your section number Lecture Outlines or Lecture Notes 6 Test Answer Sheets Do not put your name on these. Give them to me sometime during the first 2 weeks of class. Optional Materials Colored pencils or pens Study Guide for Human Anatomy and Physiology, 8th ed. Netter flashcards (Muscles and bones) Anatomy coloring books Histology atlas A Visual Analogy Guide to Human Anatomy and Physiology Attendance Policy Attendance at all classes and labs is mandatory. A student may be dropped from this class after 4 consecutive absences or 6 nonconsecutive absences. (Because lecture and laboratory count as separate class periods, missing 2 consecutive days of class or 3 nonconsecutive days would put you in jeopardy of being dropped.) I will be strict in applying this rule. Sleeping in class will also be counted as an absence.Tardiness interrupts the class, and if you are tardy, you are expected to enter the class without talking and take your seat. 2 Tardies = 1 absence, so habitual tardiness may also lead to your withdrawal from the class. When you are tardy and miss roll call, it is your responsibility to tell me that day that you are present either during break or after class. I will not change your absence to a tardy at a later date. When absences and tardies are excessive, you may be dropped by your instructor with an “X” if you have a grade of 60 or above, an “F” if you have a grade of 59 or below. Drops If you want to drop the class at any time before the last drop
