Refer to the “ASTR 620 Useful Web Links” onthe class home page to get the appropriate URLs.Problem 1.Access NASA’s Extragalactic Database (NED) and answer the following questions:(a) What is the De Vaucouleurs’ morphological type and mean optically deter-mined (heliocentric) systemic velocity of the Circinus Galaxy in km sec−1.What is its corresponding distance? Make sure to explain which distanceyou’re using. This is one of the neare st AGN known.(b) Print out the spectral energy distributions [i.e. log fν(in Jansky) as a functionof log ν ] with erro r bars for Arp 220 and 3C 273. Notice the difference s! Ithas been argued that Arp 220 will eventually become a quasar like 3 C 273;what has to happen according to the SEDs?(c) Print out the SDSS spectrum NGC 4395, a well-studied low-luminosity AGN.How many papers have been written on it?(d) Use on the cosmology calculators to determine the age of the universe atredshift z = 7.7 and the corresponding scale in kpc per arcsecond . Make sureto tell me the cosmological parameters that were used for these calculations.Problem 2.(a) Use the Multimission Archive at STScI to find and print out a far-ultravioletspectrum of the Palomar-Green QSO PG 1116+215 obtained with the Far-Ultraviolet Space Explorer (FUSE). Why are there so many absorption lines?!(b) Use the Aladin S ky Atlas at the Centre de Donn´ees Astronomiques de Stras-bourg to find and produce a multi-wavelength image showing a high-reso lutionVLA image of Arp 220 that s hows the well-known double nucleus, superposedon an optical or near-infrared image of the same object. Make s ure to showthe angular scale on the data.Problem 3.Use the astro-ph archive on the Web to answer the following questions:(a) What is the latest paper in the archive re lating to NGC 1068 in the title?(b) Print out in color Figure 4 of my recent Astrophysical Journal Letters paperwith D.S.N. Rupke.Problem 4.Use the Astronomical Data System (ADS) Abstract Service on the Web to answer thefollowing questions:(a) Print out the english version of the title from a 1899 paper in the BulletinAstronomique by A. Perot and C. Fabry. They went on to crea te the Fabry-Perot interferometer together...(b) In 2007, Spergel et al. published an article on the results from the 3 -yr WMAPdata. Give the fu ll reference and mention the number of times this paper hasbeen cited in the sc ientific literature. This is one of the highest citation ratesof all time!
