Weekly Contact Hours: Lecture: 3 hours G. Prerequisites: HLTH-150 (Medical Terminology); BIOL 151 (Human Biology) or BIOL 124 & BIOL-125 (Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II) G. Laboratory Fees: None II. Catalog Description Prerequisites: HLTH-150 (Medical Terminology); BIOL 151 (Human Biology) or BIOL-124 & BIOL 125 (Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II) This course covers disease etiology and organ system involvement, including physical signs and symptoms, prognoses, and common complications and their management. The disease process, basic concepts and terminology are presented. This course also includes an examination of the most common diseases of each body system, with normal anatomy and physiology compared to pathologic anatomy and physiologic malfunctioning due to disease process. Diagnostic methods, management, treatment modalities and prognosis are discussed. III. Statement of Course Need This course fulfills the “knowledge cluster content and competency” required by the American Health Information Management Association. The HealthInformation Technology A.A.S. degree program is currently in Candidacy status with the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The accreditation process is not complete until the program is reviewed and awarded a decision by CAHIIM. Graduates are not eligible to apply for AHIMA Certification exams (RHIA or RHIT) until the program has received an official letter from CAHIIM awarding Initial Accreditation. III. Place of Course in College Curriculum This course meets a requirement in the four-semester Health Information Technology A.A.S. degree program. V. Outline of Course Content 1. History of Medicine 2. Musculoskeletal System VI. Educational Goals and Learning Outcomes Educational Goals Students will: 1. Explore and analyze the most common disease processes for each body system. (G.E.1,3) 2. Explain how epidemiology helps to track disease and plan for the future. (G.E.1,3) 3. Identify how the beginning of the disease process, signs and symptoms and diagnostic techniques help to improve cures. (G.E.1) Learning Outcomes Students will be able to: 1. Define the common terms used to describe disease, such as lesions, organic and functional disease, symptomatic and asymptomatic disease, etiology, and pathogenesis. 2. List the major categories of human disease. 3. Explain the approach that a practitioner uses to make a diagnosis and decides on a patient’s treatment. 4. Describe the various types of diagnostic tests and procedures that can help the practitioner in making a diagnosis and deciding on proper treatment. 5. Summarize the theories concerning the pathogenesis of defined diseases, the clinical manifestations, and the methods of treatment. VII. Grade Determinants Each week the student will be responsible for completing an assignment by established due date. All late assignments will be docked 5 points. Assignments submitted with no name will not be graded and will receive a zero. The course will consist of weekly assignments, quizzes and two exams. The final grade will be based on all of these factors. The breakdown is as follows: Midterm & Final Exam 40% (20% each) Quizzes 30% Assignments 30% ________ 100% X.
