Volume 12, No. 4 JAMES WHITE LIBRARY STAFF SPRING 1998DIRECTOR'S OFFICEKeith CloutenQuiz time! 1. What island in the world is visited by more cruise ships than any other?2. What group of Caribbean islands were colonized by Denmark?3. In what U.S. territory would you drive on the left side of the road?If your answer to each question was the US Virgin Islands, you win a complimentarycruise for all of us to St. Thomas (sorry, just kidding). St. Thomas is the most populatedof the three main islands of the American-owned Virgin group, lying a few miles east ofPuerto Rico in the sun-drenched Caribbean. Ngaire and I used a bunch of frequent flyerpoints to fly there for five wonderful days during the Andrews spring break. Since our route from here to St. Thomas involved Chicago International Airport, you canguess that the weather threw a wrench in our travel plans. Early morning fog thereresulted in long delays as well as canceled flights, so the people at Delta tried to re-routeus with United (unsuccessfully, because the United agent noticed a bunch of zeros in the"amount of fare paid" section on our tickets), and then with American (successfully). Wehave nothing but praise for American Airlines, because when their flight landed in PuertoRico just minutes too late for our late evening connection to St. Thomas, they generouslygave us a free night at the San Juan beach side Marriott (taxi rides and meals included). We stayed two nights on St. Thomas, then took a ferry to the nearby island of St. Johnfor the last three. If you ever get a chance to visit St. John, grab the opportunity. It isa gorgeous island, with some of the loveliest beaches in the world, mostly remote andunspoiled by development since most of the island is a national park. We took oursnorkel gear and spent about four hours each day in the water, sharing the coral reefswith every kind of colorful marine creature imaginable. And, yes, they do drive on the left in the US Virgin Islands, so be prepared. We renteda little Suzuki four-by-four, and appreciated its energetic performance on the steep hillsthat provide roller-coaster type thrills. But home is always a great place to end a journey, and with you, we have enjoyed thewonderful spring beauty of southwest Michigan. Home is also people, and I can't resistthe chance to say that the people I work with each day are the best in the world. Thankyou for your part in making our James White Library environment interesting, stimulatingand a happy place to be.INFORMATION SERVICESWolfhard TouchardAfter two tries, I finally am on the program of the "Midwest International Band &Orchestra Clinic." My topic will be "Surfing the Net More Successfully." It is so tough toget a spot at this convention. My granddaughter is getting very affectionate. When I am at her home, she will say Opaor Opi (grandfather in German) maybe 20 to 30 times. She surely is a little "light."The Outreach Team had a successful concert at the Southlake Mall in Merrillville, IN. We started with "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" with the trumpet. In between I alsoplayed "Amazing Grace" (an older man thanked me for playing it) and "How Great Thou Art." People, especially the youth, were singing with us as they walked by the stage. A ladyasked for my card, for she wanted to have the group sing at her church. I took theSabbath Expressions with me.My team conducted many Prayer Conferences. Two were here on campus. . . .Judy NelsonWell, it must be about a time for a change as students are now getting used to lookingup things on the computers. Statistics show that our references questions are up, but theevening BI classes that are normally held at the beginning of each quarter had to becanceled for lack of interest. I am sure that the great spring weather was a factor. It is nice to have Wolfhard back in good health again. Cynthia's sister, who is sufferingfrom cancer, and Cynthia have been in our prayers and thoughts. It just reminds us thatnothing in this world is sure, and we do not know what we will have to go through. We welcome back Flora Milosavljevic who has worked in our department before. Sheis currently working on a degree in Biology and plans to be here for a couple of years. This quarter has made me realize again just how much we depend on our studentworkers.I am enjoying using the new computer in my office. It is great to have Netscape, WordPrefect 8, e-mail and all the other programs on my office computer. Thanks, Robert andWendell, for all you do to keep our computers running. You may want to check the Interlibrary Loan office if you are having trouble finding mein my office. I am trying to learn all of Sandi's secrets about Interlibrary Loan, so thatwhen she is gone this summer for Susie's wedding and then vacation the InterlibraryLoan office won't fall apart completely. The library tours to Albion College and Kalamazoo Public Library on April 29th were reallygreat. We were given a royal reception at Albion, and the tour guide for the KalamazooPublic Library was excellent. He really made us feel at home. I would recommend thateveryone visit this library. The design is worth seeing, and it is such a pleasant placeto do research or just read. The maple syrup season was looking doubtful because of the warm weather. The coldweather we had in early March proved to be a blessing, as it made the trees produceenough sap to make the difference between a good season and a bad season. The mildwinter proved to be an added blessing as Dave was able to finish the addition on his barnand put in a new evaporator. The weather has been pretty good on the weekends which makes Sabbath even moreenjoyable. We have been trying to enjoy this beautiful spring by getting outside moreand seeing all the beautiful wild flowers.I want to thank each one who helped to make Marc and Melissa's shower special. Thegroup gift was a comforter that they had selected at J.C. Penneys. They were surprisedand delighted with it. Have a great summer. . . .Sandra White I have been riding on a "high" for about a month now. On April 3 Cleon and I flew fromO'Hare airport to SeaTac airport near Seattle so that I could attend Alumni Weekend atAuburn Academy. It was my 40th year. As a class we were able to spend a lot of timetogether, more than at my 30th reunion. We ate lunch together, spent the
