1 Eastfield College College Readiness Division Fall, 2011 SYLLABUS: Trigonometry MATH 1316.4002 3-Credit Hours This class meets in room C279 on MWF, beginning August 29, 2011, and ending December 15, 2011, from 12:30 PM until 1:50 PM. Instructor: Dr. Timothy Lo Contact Information: Office: C306 Office Hours: M-F 11:00am-12:00pm, others by appointment Phone: (972) 860-7675 Email Address: [email protected] GRADING POLICY: Your course grade will be based on three midterm exams, homework assignments & quizzes, and a comprehensive final exam. Each will be 20% of the total. There will be no make-up exam or quizzes allowed. One test grade can be replaced with the final exam score if one is missed. All tests are closed book. No notes, books, cell phones, graphing calculators are allowed. You may use scientific calculators that do not have the graphing capabilities. GRADING RATIONALE: 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D 0-59 F CATALOG: Prerequisite: Mathematics 1314 or Mathematics 1414 or equivalent, or approval of instructor. This course is a study of angular measures, functions of angles, identities, solutions of triangles, equations, inverse trigonometric functions, and complex numbers. TEXTBOOK: Trigonometry, Ratti & McWaters, 1/e , Addison-Wesley, 2010 ISBN: 0-321-56798-6 or 978-0-321-56798-7 CALCULATOR: A graphing calculator is required for all College Algebra Courses or above. You may choose your own graphing calculator model; however, TI 83 or TI 84 version is preferred. Graphing Calculators may not be allowed during some examinations. However, you may use scientific calculators that do not have the graphing capabilities.2 POLICY ON MISSED TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS: There will be no make-up exam or quizzes allowed. It is the student’s responsibility to find out from classroom when the exams may be. GRADE REPORT: Grade reports are no longer mailed. Convenient access is available online. Just use your student identification number when you log onto e-Connect at http://econnect.dcccd.edu/. DROP DATE: Last date to drop with a grade of “W” is 11/17/2011. ATTENDANCE POLICY: (2004-2006, Eastfield College Catalog, Dallas County Community College District, page 58.) You are expected to regularly attend all classes in which they are enrolled. Students have the responsibility to attend class and to consult with the instructor when an absence occurs. Instructors are responsible for describing attendance policies and procedures to all students enrolled in their class. If a student is unable to complete a course (or courses) in which he/she is registered, it is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course by the appropriate date. (The date is published in the academic calendar each year and in each semester’s class schedule). If a student does not withdraw, he/she will receive a performance grade, usually a grade of “F”. Students who are absent from class for the observance of a religious holiday may take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence if, not later than the 15th day of the semester, the student notified the instructor(s) that the student would be absent for a religious holiday. Sec. 51.911 TX Educ. Code. If you are receiving Financial Aid grants or loans, you must begin attendance in all classes. Do not drop or stop attending any class without consulting the Financial Aid Office. Changes in your enrollment level and failing grades may require that you repay financial aid funds. Attendance will be taken daily. If a student misses no more than 6 hours total in the semester, he/she is eligible for the opportunity to replace their lowest test score with the final exam score. DROP POLICY: To drop a class or withdraw from the college, students must follow the prescribed procedure. It is the student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw. Failure to do so will result in receiving a performance grade, usually grade of “F”. No drop or withdrawal requests are accepted by telephone. Students who drop a class or withdraw from the College before the semester deadline receive a “W” (Withdraw) in each class dropped. The deadline for receiving a “W” is indicated on the academic calendar and the current class schedule. If you are unable to complete this course, you must withdraw from it by 11/17/2011. For more information, contact the Admissions/Registrar’s Office at 972-860-7167 (Room C 119.)3 STOP BEFORE YOU DROP SIX DROP RULE: For students who enrolled in college level courses for the first time in the fall of 2007, Texas Education Code 51.907 limits the number of courses a student may drop. You may drop no more than 6 courses during your entire undergraduate career, unless the drop qualifies as an exception. Your campus counseling/advising center will give you more information on the allowable exceptions. Remember that once you have accumulated 6 non-exempt drops you cannot drop any other courses with a “W”. Therefore, please exercise caution when dropping courses in any Texas public institution of higher learning, including all seven of the Dallas County Community Colleges. INCOMPLETES An incomplete grade of “I” may be given when an unforeseen emergency prevents you from completing the work in a course. The “I” must be converted to a performance grade (A-F) within 90 days after the first day of classes in the subsequent regular semester. If the work is not completed after 90 days, the “I” is converted to a performance grade, usually an “F”. An Incomplete Contract is used to assign an incomplete grade and states the requirements for the satisfactory completion of the course. The Incomplete Contract must be agreed upon and signed by the Instructor, the student, and the division dean and submitted with the final grade report. When an Incomplete Contract must be submitted without your signature, the instructor must include a statement indicating that you are aware of and agree with the contract.
