Third Edition Interactive Genetics, CD-ROM and workbook, by Johnson and Merriam Assignments: (See the Assignments table for weekly assignments.) Textbook: The assigned end-of-chapter problems are critical to learning the subject matter. You must complete the week's problems before discussion section of the following week. The discussion quiz is derived from the previous week's assignment. Interactive Genetics (CD): The workbook and interactive problems are an introduction to concepts and problem solving (before starting textbook assignments). You may experience problems with Interactive Genetics software on newer Apple computers. All computer labs on campus have PCs so the IG software can be used there as well. Course web site: http://www.lsic.ucla.edu/classes/spring10/ On the course website you will find an updated copy of the syllabus and any added or optional course material. If you have a problem with accessing the course website, refer to the «Login questions?» link or go to the computer lab in Life Science Building 2127 for help.Bruincast: Each lecture will be Bruincast, which may be accessed from the course web site. Online access to lectures should be treated as supplemental. Regular attendance to lecture is strongly recommended as it will keep you up to date. Lecture slides will be posted after each lecture. Grading: Point distribution: 1st midterm exam 20 points 2nd midterm exam 20 points final exam 44 points discussion section 16 points (2 points per quiz) total 100 points Final grades: For consistency among LS4 offerings, final grades will reflect student percentile ranking. Your final grade will be based on the number of students who completed the 1st midterm. Thus, your final grade will be unaffected by the number of students who drop LS4-2 after the 1st midterm. Do not ask more specific questions about final grades as it is inappropriate for me to predict your outcome. Discussion section: Your participation in discussion section is required. This is a time to go over concepts, ask questions and do in-class assignments. If you cannot attend the section that you are enrolled in, you need to contact the Life Science Core office to change your section time. Discussion quizzes: There will be eight quizzes during the quarter. Each quiz is 2 points and will be given during your discussion section in weeks 2 through 9 (see course schedule for dates). Exams: Genetic problems and short essays. Questions will be drawn from lectures and assigned problems. Midterms: Two midterms are given from 5-6:50pm on Thursday April 22nd and May 13th. No make-up exams are given. If you have a conflict with scheduled exam times, please contact me as soon as possible. Returning exams: Midterm exams will be distributed during your discussion section the first and second week following the exam, after which exams can be retrieved from the Life Science Core office. Regrading policy: If you feel a grading error was made on your midterm exam, please submit your exam to the Life Science Core office (LS 2305) no later than the second Friday following the exam. Attach a separate sheet with the problem number to be reviewed. An error on the specified problem number will be considered, but correction may involve scoring on an unrelated problem. Life Science Core office For administrative problems related to this course, please contact Lily Yanez or Jane Park ([email protected]) in the Life Science Core office in LSB room 2305 or call
