STAT 210 1st EditionLecture 1 Last Lecture:I. No material covered, just syllabusOutline of Current LectureII. Introduction and basic definitionsIII. Statistics, population, parameterCurrent LectureIV. Statistics –a science that involves the extraction of information from numerical data obtained during an experiment or from a sample. It involves the design of the experiment or sampling procedure and the collection of the data, the analysis of the data, and making inferences (statements) about the population based upon information in a sampleV. Population – entire group of individuals about which the researcher wants informationa. Examples:1) All United States citizens2) All male students at VCU3) All sections of all courses taught this semester at VCUVI. Parameter – some characteristic of the population that the researcher wants to measurea. Examples:1) Proportion of US. citizens who voted inthe 2008 Presidential election2) Average (mean) height of all male studentsat VCU3) Proportion of all sections of all coursestaught by adjunct (part-time) facultyVII. Sample – subset of the population that is contacted and examined for further informationa. Example:1) When the population is all male VCU students a sample would be all male students in this classVIII. Statistic – a descriptive measure, computed from data in a sample, that can be expressed or evaluated numerically.a. Example: For the sample of male students in this class one can compute the average height of these students. This average height is a statistic. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.IX. Inference – a statement about a population based on the data collected in a samplea. Example:1) To estimate the average height of all male VCUstudents we can compute the average height ofthe male students in this class.X. Example:a. Pop. Of interest = 204 countries eligible to win medals at the Olympics b. Sample = 20 countries/territories selected for the study1) 204 = parameter (Because it’s the number of countries/territories in thepopulation)2) 20 = statistic (because it’s the size of the sample)3) 65% = statistic because it’s referring to the sample4) 93% = statistic because again it’s referring to the sample5) 81 = parameter because it’s talking about the
