SUBSCRIPTION TO MILKYWAY: ASTRONOMY 101 LISTSERV(5 points--if completed by Feb. 17)Purpose of the listserv: MILKYWAY, our listserv for Astronomy 101, is provided as a studyaid for students. Subscription to MILKYWAY is required as an assignment. Useful informationwill be sent to you about once a week, including the STAR CENTER practice exams. Getting a WAM account and E-mail:If you have questions regarding how to register for a WAM account, please see the yellowhandout or the consultants in CSS 1400 (8-6 M-F) for help. For more information, pick up the 20page green handout "Getting Started with your WAM Unix Account" in CSS 1400. There arepeer training classes ($5) offered to help you become more familiar with our computer system.For information about classes look for the Peer Training Handout in CSS 1400. Location of someWAM Labs: CSS 3330, 3332, 4352; Parking Garage 2 basement. You may use another account,like America Online or hotmail for your MILKYWAY subscription.Subscribing to MILKYWAY from ASTR 101 Computer Lab:You may complete this assignment at home if you have another server, like aol.Following the directions below regarding the “subscribe” message and confirmation procedure.If you use your university account—the WAM "mail" program used is called PINE. Let'sassume you have successfully registered for E-mail, have your new WAM login ID andpassword. You establish a connection with WAM. (From the ASTR 101 labroom CSS 1120:you should be in windows. Click on the ASTR 101 folder and click on wam.umd.edu. Typewam.umd.edu then return. Once a connection is established provide the following:login: your login IDpassword: your passwordYou will see “There is unread WAM news”—hit n (for no), return.You should see something like rac5> or rac3>. This is the command prompt and you type pineand return. You should see the PINE main menu displayed.To subscribe to MILKYWAY you want Compose Message so just hit c, no return after it.You will see a "Compose Message" screen so type the following in bold:To : [email protected] and returnCc : returnAttchmnt: returnSubject : return------Message Text---type subscribe milkyway first name last name returnThis is your first and last name.Now to send your message hold down the control key and hit x You will see "Send message? [y] hit y no return. Exit pine by hitting q return and y -yesyou really want to quit. Wait about a minute. Re-type pine and return. Wait until the messagesnumber appears on your screen. Hit i for folder index. Your messages will appear. You willreceive a mail message from L-Soft list server asking you to confirm your subscription. Spacedown and hit return to display this message. Hit r for reply and y for yes to include originalmessage. Type ok and then hit Control x to send message and y for yes. Hit m to return to mainmenu and q to quit pine. Type logout and let others in your group subscribe. Check your maillater and you should receive 3 more messages from L-Soft list server if you have successfullysubscribed—the Welcome to Milkyway message appears—5 pts!Next week in Lab your TA will have a list of successful MILKYWAY subscribers. If you are noton the list, please try again to subscribe. Or, if you have received the “confirmation” emailmessage mentioned above and aren’t on the list, please see Mrs. Deming. If you continue to haveproblems, see Mrs. Deming or your TA for help.Reading mail on MILKYWAY:To check messages after you have successfully subscribed, type pine return.From main menu (m) of PINE you want Folder Index so you type i no need to hit return. Usearrow keys to find the message you want to read and then hit return. Your mail message shouldbe displayed.Subscribing from outside the Astronomy Computer Lab:Use the Astronomy Computer Lab instructions as a guide:1. Access your mail program.2. Send a message to [email protected]. In body of message include: subscribe milkyway first name last name4. Within 24 hours, respond to the “Confirm” message.5. Reply to this message, include message from listserv, and type “ok”6. Check to make sure that you receive the “Welcome to Milkyway” message.Unsubscribing from MILKYWAY:When you no longer wish to received MILKYWAY’s messages, send mail to:[email protected] and your message should readunsub milkyway returnControl x , followed by y sends the message.At the end of the semester, all subscribers will be dropped automatically.If you delete your MILKYWAY mail messages, you can recover them from the coursewebsite:
