CLASS SCHEDULE WEEK OF TOPIC ASSIGNMENT February^ 10 - Introduction - Course overview - Review of textbook Web site - Become familiar with the templates and read Chapter 1. 17 - Overview of a Financial Plan - Submit three (3) short-term, three (3) intermediate-term and three (3) long-term financial goals. Due February 22, 2009 (50 points). - Read Chapters 2 and 3. 24 - Planning with Personal Financial Statements - Applying Time Value Concepts - Submit a personal cash flow statement, budget*, and balance sheet. Due March 1, 2009 (100 points). - Read Chapters 4, 5 and 6. March 3 - Using Tax Concepts for Planning - Banking and Interest Rates - Managing Your Money - Submit a banking services scorecard for at least four (4) financial institutions and indicate which you would choose and why. Due March 15, 2009 (50 points). - Read Chapters 7 and 8. 17 - Assessing and Securing Your Credit - Managing Your Credit - Submit a report identifying at least five (5) steps that you can take to protect yourself from identity theft*. Due March 22, 2009 (50 points). - Read Chapters 9 and 10. 24 - Personal Loans - Purchasing and Financing a Home - Submit an analysis of renting versus owning a home based upon your own unique circumstances or, if you live with your parents, prepare a hypothetical analysis. Due March 29, 2009 (100 points). - Read Chapters 11 and 12. 31 - Auto and Homeowner’s Insurance - Health and Disability Insurance - Prepare and submit a home inventory. Based on your findings, write a short paper evaluating your current insurance coverage. Due April 5, 2009 (100 points). - Read Chapters 13 and 14. April 7 - Life Insurance - Investing Fundamentals - Submit an analysis determining your need for life insurance and the amount. Due April 12, 2009 (50 points). - Read Chapters 15 and 16. Due April 19, 2009 (50 points). - Read Chapters 17 and 18. April 21 - Investing in Bonds - Investing in Mutual Funds - Submit a short paper (one to two pages) discussing why or why not bonds would be a good investment for you*. Due April 26, 2009 (25 points). - Read Chapters 19 and 20. 28 - Asset Allocation - Retirement Planning - Submit a retirement plan for yourself. This plan should be very detailed and include how various financial tools such as IRAs and 401(k)s will be utilized. Include specific dollar amounts. Due May 3, 2009 (50 points). - Read Chapters 21 and 22. May 5 - Estate Planning - Integrating the Components of a Financial Plan - Discussion on managing your financial plan - Submit a one to two page paper discussing your need for estate planning including a will. If you do not currently meet the requirements for needing a will, discuss fully what events in your future will necessitate a will or estate plan*. Due May 9, 2009 (25 points). - Prepare an inventory of the location of important documents. Due May 9, 2009 (25 bonus points). ^ On the JCC website is a link to distance learning. Using the current student tab, you will see a tutorial on Moodle. Use this tutorial to become familiar with how to use Moodle to correspond with me, file your assignments and check your grades. For your convenience, a tutorial on how to submit your homework can also be found on the “Weekly Outline.” The Workbook provides templates that will be used in preparing the majority of your assignments. All assignments must be submitted as either a .doc or .xls. Documents submitted in other formats oftentimes cannot be opened and you will be required to resubmit in one of the formats listed above. *Those assignments marked with an asterisk do not have a template. Carefully read all instructions in the workbook portion of your text for preparing the templates used in the assignments. Assignments requiring templates submitted in other formats will lose points.3 II. LEARNING OUTCOMES After completing BUA 111, the student will have the ability and skills to do the following: 1. To prepare personal financial goals including short, intermediate and long term. 2. To construct a personal budget. 3. To analyze the current and future housing requirements for the student’s family. 4. To complete a risk analysis and suitable insurance plan. 5. To assess risk tolerance and utilize it to construct an investment plan. 6. To utilize the computer for assessing the appropriateness of investment opportunities. 7. To present a cohesive, written financial plan. (ADO 1) The Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the College. One of these Associate Degree outcomes is addressed in this class as indicated above. CLASS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES 1. No late work will be accepted. 2. I reserve the right to change the class schedule as necessary to better fit the needs of the class. All changes will be announced at least seven days in advance. 3. No form of cheating or plagiarism will be tolerated. Such actions shall be dealt with in accordance with the procedures set forth in the Student Handbook. IV.
