Students should have already taken PHYS-2010 before takingthis course. Topics will include electricity, magnetism, wave motion, optics, atomic, and particlephysics. The main goal of this course is to demonstrate to you how the nature operates. GeneralPhysics II is a problem- solving course, that is, the measure of a student’s progress isdemonstrate d by the ability to solve algebraic and trigonometric problem s, and notjust to quote facts, laws and formul as. The assigned homework assignments are designed tohelp you develop these skill s and the exams will test you on these skills. It is assumed that youhave a reasonable working knowledge of algebra and trigonometry at the Gener al Physics I level. If you suspect your m ath preparation is i nadequate by all means, please consult with me duringmy office hours (or at some prearranged meeting time). You are e xpected to have (and knowhow to use ) a good scientific calculator — espec ially for the exams. The Department does nothave calculators to loan, and the sharing of a calculator with your cl assmates on exams is NOTpermitted. The book store sells such calculators.Exams & HomeworkThere will be 3 exams throughout the semester, plus a comprehensive final on the dates liste don the first page of this syllabus. Each will cover material prior to the test and be taken duringclass time as shown in the table below. Each exam will be worth 20% and the final worth 30%of your course grade. N ote that all physical constants and formulae t hat you may require will besupplied on the exams. Otherwise, the exams are closed book and notes – you will not be allowedto c onsult any external written materials. An exception to this rule concerns the final. You willbe allowed to bring one 8.5x11” sheet of pap er to the final with anything you wi sh to write on it(“examples” might be a better i dea than a grocery list).Exam Note Sections Text book Chapters Date Given1 I, II, III 15, 16, 17 Monday, Feb 11, 20132 IV, V, VI 18, 19, 20 Monday, Mar 4, 20133 VII, VIII, IX, X 13, 14, 21, 28 Monday, Apr 8, 2013Final12(XII–X IV) +12(I–XI)12(23–25) +12(13–22, 28) Monday, May 6, 2013Sickness and Make-Up Exams: If you are sick, do not come t o school! If thi s occurson exam day, you will be all owed to take a make-up exam. However, c ontact me by emailor phone pri or to a scheduled exam to l et me know that you are sick. The make-upexams are similar in structure to the in-class exams, though the questions will be different. Stayat home if you are sick!!!PHYS-2020-003 Syllabus Page 3There will be 4 homework sets assigned throughout the semester composed of two sections ofquestions. The first section will be questions generated by the CAPA software package and accessedthrough the Department’s CAPA web site (see http://capa.etsu.edu/). You will be givenfurther information about CAPA during lecture. These CAPA questions must be accessed througha web browser and wil l be graded . If you don’t have access to the web at home, you can use anyof the computer labs on campus. The second section of problems will not be graded and will havesolutions posted on the course web page. Try to do these problems by yourself before viewing thesolutions on the c ourse web page. Doing b oth sec t ions of questions will be a big help in studyingfor the exams and the CAPA problems will b e used in calculating your final grade for the course. Each exam will have a 5 point extra credit question on it (the final will have two 5 point questions). No other extra c redit project(s) will be allowed, so don’t even ask.Tutoring and Supplemental HelpMany students find General Physics I & II very challenging and have a difficult time understandingthe princ iples of physics and solvi ng physics problems. Mainly, this is due to a lack of trainingof logical thought skills during se condary school. Due to this, there are a variety of ways to getadditional help wi t h this course.1. The Center for Academic Achievement offered by ETSU(see http://www.etsu.edu/scs/uts/default.asp on the web).2. Assistance from the Professor during office hours in Brown Hall 280 (see Page 1 of thissyllabus).3. Review sessions prior to each exam (date and times to be determined during lecture the weekprior to the exam).4. Tutors for Hire can b e obtained by the individual student taking General Physics. Thesetutors are typically either current or past physics majors who charge a fee for their services. Most of the current
