W. Oxtoby & P. Gillis.OPTIONAL TEXTS:• Study Guide for Principles of Modern Chemistry.• Lecture Notes for 20A prepared by me, available from the Lecture Notes desk, Ackerman Building, level A.READING & HOMEWORK: You should attempt to read assigned chapters before related lectures.Homework will be given on the Monday lecture and will be due in your discussion section the following week.No late homework will be accepted. NO ONE will be permitted to take the final exam either earlier than or later than the scheduled time, andno one will receive a passing grade in the course without taking the final exam. Incomplete course grades will begiven only in the case of a serious medical emergency. The exam will be “pencils-only,” and you will besupplied with a copy of the periodic table. No books, notes, calculators, pager or cellular phones will beallowed (students found in possession of any of these items during exams will receive zero on the exam).Pagers and cellular phones are also not allowed during lectures.GRADING: The sum of all homework scores will be worth 10% of your final grade. Each midterm will count22% toward the final grade, and the final exam will count 46%. The class is graded on a curve rather than on anabsolute scale.COMPUTER SELF-STUDY: A mandatory but ungraded diagnostic quiz will be given in the first discussionsection (this includes October 1 and 2) to determine whether you need to review basic math, physics, andchemistry (exponentials, logarithms, algebra, simple calculus, simple physics, units, significant figures, molecularweights, stoichiometry, balancing equations, etc.). If you have trouble with any part of the quiz, computersoftware is available in 1054 Young Hall to review this material.DN – Chem20A Fall 98 Outline 2 10/1/98CHEM. 20A-1 Tentative Lecture & Reading Schedule FALL 1998Instructor: Daniel NeuhauserWEEK TOPIC READINGOct. 2 Basic Physics & Chemistry Oxtoby: Ch. 1-2, App. A-B, C.1, C.3Notes: Set 1Oct. 5, 7, 9 Intro.
