Johnson Hist. 1302-C9 Email: [email protected] Off: Hrs: MWF-9:00 -11:00 Office Number: A-217 & TR-9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Phone: 209-7316 MEETS: 12:00 TO 1:15 COURSE DESCRIPTION: History 1302 is a survey of United States History since the Reconstruction Period. The course covers the industrial, social, and political problems of the nineteenth century as well as the emergence of the United States as a world power in the twentieth century. This survey discusses the rise of progressivism, World War I, reaction and the New Deal; World War II; and contemporary America. PREREQUISITES: Passing Score on Reading Section of THEA CORE CURRICULUM COURSE: This is a Core Course in the 42-Hour Core of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives. The URL for the Blinn College Core Curriculum web site is: www.blinn.edu/corecurriculum.htm COURSE OBJECTIVES and STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: After successfully completing History 1302, students should have a working knowledge of the following: • Rise of big business and labor unions •Major reforms instituted in the 19th and 20th centuries •Major wars fought during this period •Changes in foreign policy •Major changes in social issues •Major economic changesAfter successfully completing History 1302, students should have a working knowledge of the rise of big business and labor unions, major reforms instituted in the 19th and 20th centuries, major wars fought during this period, and major changes in foreign policy as well as social issues that occurred in U.S. society during this period of history. If a student is asked to leave the classroom because of uncivil behavior, the student MAY NOT return to that class until he or she arranges a conference with the instructor: it is the student's responsibility to arrange for this conference.ATTENDANCE: Without full participation and regular class attendance, students shall find themselves at a severe disadvantage for achieving success in college. Class participation shall constitute at least ten percent of the final course grade. It is the responsibility of each faculty member, in consultation with the division chair, to determine how participation is achieved in his or her class. Faculty will require students to regularly attend class and will keep a record of attendance from the first day of class and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he/she will be sent an e-mail by the College requiring the student to contact his/her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. If the student accumulates two weeks worth of unexcused absences, he/she will be administratively withdrawn from class. OTHER POLICIES: No food or drinks in the classroom. Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism or collusion. Procedures for dealing with these acts are outlined in the Scholastic Dishonesty Policy. Cellular phones and pagers must be turned off before entering the classroom. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to the textbook material, students will be required to take notes over class lectures. If the student misses a lecture, he/she may also listen to it online on audio. Questions over these materials will be included on each exam. The 4 Reading portions of the exams will be worth at least 55pts. Each, and the 4 Lecture portions will also be worth at least 55 pts. each. Total points for the exams will be worth at least 500pts. Students will also be required to complete 3 Essay Assignments worth up to 10pts. each and 2 for 35pts. each for a total of a 100 pts. towards your total overall pts. The first 3 will be based on materials found in the Reader and the next 2 will be based on handouts provided by the instructor online. To find the essay assignments, go to your E-CAMPUS and click on the “LESSONS TAB” All History 1302 classes are required to have students read a biography of an important American figure. Therefore, the class will be reading the biography of Harry S. Truman.REQUIRED SUPPLEMENTAL READINGS ESSAYS: 10PTS. EACH: You will need to purchase the reader to do the following: Reader: Readings in United States History, Vol. II, Fifth edition, edited by Ron Wright and Larry Watson. The student will be required to hand in after he/she has completed each of the three exams, a short review essay (10pts.) on an article selected by the instructor from the supplemental readings. The review essay must be typed & double spaced (at least two pages in length and a font size no larger than
