The most common problem was that some of you misread the question. The topic asked you to determine whether Zwick addressed the points made by Marano and Dubik (following or models). It did NOT ask whether or not Zwick AGREED with both Dubik and Marano. However, some of you said things like: “I believe that Zwick agreed with Dubik in most cases. He only agreed with Marano in one case.” 2. To repeat, the Red question asks whether or not Zwick addressed the kinds of objections that Marano raised somewhere in the film. It does not mean that Zwick had to have agreed with Marano somewhere in the film. 3. The Red topic is supposed to be an objective analysis. Many of you included comments indicating whether or not you agreed with the essays or with the film. Those kinds of comments do not belong in this paper. This was supposed to be an objective analysis of the two essays and the film. 4. Some of you tried to argue that Zwick did address both the pros and cons of the issue of women in ground combat, but you did not mention Dubik or Marano. The question requires that you use both authors in your analysis, because I wanted to see the following: a) How you analyzed Marano.b) How you analyzed Dubik.c) How you analyzed Zwick’s film.d) How you applied your analysis of (a) and (b) to (c) to answer the question. 5. The purpose of this question is to get you to read analytically and then get you to apply your analyses to solve a specific problem. file:///D|/English20/E2O.CD%20ROM/SAMPLE_FEEDBACK/SAMPLE%20FEEDBACK%202.htm (1 of 2) [7/31/2002 8:00:17 PM]2 February 2001 • ENGLISH 20 • Tanaka6. Your paper begins with an understanding of the logic of the question. 7. One of the reasons that Marano is hard to summarize is that his arguments are very weak. In fact, he comes close to contradicting himself. He also makes a lot of assumptions that don’t make a lot of sense, e.g., that future wars will be like World War 1 and 2 and that women in combat will replace men in combat. So you need to understand what he is saying to determine what his primary arguments are. You can’t take him literally. 8. Also, you have to distinguish between women in the military, women in combat and women in ground combat. You can’t treat them as if they meant the same thing. file:///D|/English20/E2O.CD%20ROM/SAMPLE_FEEDBACK/SAMPLE%20FEEDBACK%202.htm (2 of 2) [7/31/2002 8:00:17
