Please call ext. 35400 for more assistance.Description of the CourseOverview of research findings in counseling psychology including current emphases in content areas of interest, summary of strategies utilized, and identification of persisting dilemmas and issues. Students in Counseling Psychology take EPSY 8334 during their second semester of the first year of doctoral work. This course has been approved by the State Board of Education and meets the following standards: American Psychological Association (APA) Standards for the Accreditation of Programs in Professional Psychology, Domain B:1 (a) and 3(a) (http://www.apa.org/ed/G&P.pdf ; see Appendix I); American Psychology Association (APA) Learner-Centered Psychological Principles: 2, 3, 8, and 11 (http://www.apa.org/ed/lcp2/lcp14.html see Appendix II); and, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards:1.2.1, 1.2.3, 1.2.4, and 2.2.1 (See Appendix III).Link to College’s Conceptual FrameworkFollowing the conceptual framework for the College of Education, “Collaboration for Learning and Leading,” in this course students examine the role that collaboration between researchers and practitioners play in advancing the field of counseling psychology. Students also examine the importance of applying theoretical and empirical knowledge in providing leadership in psychological practices and programs, including issues related to the identification and implementation of empirically supported treatments. The knowledge and skills students acquire in this course regarding content and methodological issues in research in counseling psychology are designed to prepare them to become leaders in the field in their chosen area of research expertise. Also, students further develop their skills in conducting empirical studies and writing reports of their findings to collaborate with others in the field by sharing their expertise.Class ObjectivesEPSY 8334 Page 1Students will: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of research design and statistical analysis issues related to (a) correlationalstudies in psychology and (b) experimental studies designed to evaluate psychotherapy outcome.2. Demonstrate the ability to formulate a research question or hypotheses to examine in a research project, based on the review of the empirical literature in the area.3. Produce a preliminary research proposal designed to examine specific research questions or hypotheses in their areas of interest. 4. Become familiar with the (a) the criteria used by APA Division 12 and other professional groups toidentify empirically validated treatments, and (b) issues related to the generalizability of knowledgeregarding empirically validated treatments. 5.
