GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.b. Methods: dream analysis, free association, Freudian slips (say things out loud; embarrassing; decides your unconscious; “sex o’ clock vs. six o’ clock), case studies c. Personality arises from conflicts between aggressive/pleasure seeking impulses &internalized social restraints against them; like an iceberg – underwater is the unconscious i. id – pleasure principle; immediate gratification; cookie monster searching for pleasure; devil on your shoulder ii. superego – how you should act, behave; morals; angel on your shoulderiii. ego – reality principle; personality chief d. Personality Development i. Psychosexual Stages: id’s pleasure seeking energies focus on erogenous zones1. Oral Stage (10-18 months): id focus on the mouth; baby exploring with mouth; during time when baby is weaning off breastfeeding –milestone 2. Anal Stage (18-36 months): potty training – milestone 3. Phallic Stage (3-6 years): Oedipus Complex (boys) – child is in love with his mother, jealous of father; worried that father will find out and castrate him – causes anxiety. Electra Complex (girls) – girls fall in love with father 4. Latency (6-puberty) 5. Genital Stage (puberty): generate attractions to appropriate; not family membersii. Maladaptive behavior results from unresolved conflicts – “fixation”: something went wrong1. Oral Fixation: nail biting, chewing gum, biting pens, thumb sucking, etc. 2. Anal Retention: very neat, detail oriented verses Anal Expulsive: very messy 3. Phallic Fixation: never get along with certain parent; only way to resolve phallic stage is for the child to figure out it is a losing battleiii. Defense mechanisms reduce or redirect anxieties (repression, projection, regression, etc.) e. Assessing the Unconscious i. Projective Tests: involve ambiguous stimuli; you are projecting your emotions onto the stimuli 1. Rorschach Inkblot Test: black images, you say what is going on in image2. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): shown images, asked to describe what is going on in the image3. Draw A Person Test (DAPT): displays your mental state4.
