Defining ID (intellectual disability-- sub-average intellectual functioning, deficits in adaptive behavior, manifests during developmental period, adversely impacts educational performance.a. Most people who have intellectual disabilities, you wouldn't know right away because many are fairly high-functioningb. Characteristics of people with ID: limitations in intellectual functioning (think what level of support do these individuals need, more of what help we can give them rather than giving them a label)II. Discussion: Jonas has a paraprofessional assigned to him when he goes to his general education classes. His mother does not like this. Why not? --Velcro Effect. (if you have someone there always doing things for you, you're never going to learn it. Social effect of always having an adult being with you.)III. Supplementary aids and services:a. Paraprofessional support, technology supports, peer supports.b. Remember: if you have a student with an ID and they have a paraprofessional with them, you still are expected to teach the student. Still responsible for what the student learns in class. Help direct the paraprofessional's activities.c. If you have a student with an ID, how likely is it that you'll actually be at the IEP meeting? --they really will have a general educator at the meetings, but (especially at the high school level) generally they have a teacher come who is on conference. You should really try to go to your student's IEP meetings. IV. Assessment tools:a. Might be asked to fill out an adaptive behavior scale or have someone come observe a student in your class, but as a teacher will not be involved in the IQ testingThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
