An interest group: any group that attempts to influence policyb. PAC: a group that can give money to elected officials and candidatesi. A sub-group of interest groupsii. Virtually all PACs are connected to an IG and act as the money end of the groupiii. Not all IGs have PACs- some do not give money (AARP)iv. Not all political action committees have an IG; Emily’s list gives money to female candidatesv. PAC has to file lots of paperwork at a state/federal level before able to donate money 1. That’s why we don’t know how many IGs there are, because they are not registeredII. Interest groups a. Who joins IGs and why?i. Interest group participation based on occupation, social class, and education2. Poor people don’t have money to pay lobbyists of IGsii. Motivations for joining interest groups 1. Solidary incentives- people be around others who agree with theirviews2. Purposive incentives- we join because we believe in the purpose of the organization3. Economic incentives-there are benefits to joining AARPiii. As an IG, you have to know your audience, and what motivates themiv. IGs: get people’s votes, and their support to influence politicians, etc. III. Types of interest groupsa. Economic interest groupsi. Primarily focused on economic issuesii. Business groups, unions, agricultural (occupational/field of work related)iii. Primary interest is fiscal policy: taxes, tariffs, etc. b. Citizen Interest Groupsi. Primarily focused on issues concerning the general publicii. Primary interest is government regulation 1. Solidary and purposive incentives usuallyc. Single issue groupsi.
