Catalogue Description: Concepts and issues in the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth and development of children and early adolescents: prenatal through middle school/junior high. Course Description: This course provides broad and salient coverage of development from birth through adolescence. It offers a balanced and eclectic selection of topics, a firm foundation of classic and up-to-date research, and an examination of timely issues such as abuse, genetic counseling and changing family lifestyles. Course Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment with ELE 2000 is recommended. Course Rationale: This course will orient students to learning principles/theories and child development principles/theories and will serve as a foundation for higher level courses. Course Goal: This course is intended to increase knowledge of ways children grow, develop and learn from the time they are conceived until they have matured beyond early adolescence. The physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of children and adolescents will be explored. Appropriate activities that promote the growth of children and adolescents, and societal changes which influence their development, will also be investigated. Objectives for all ELE Classes: • Develop a desire for lifelong learning in students and personally display one’s own desire for lifelong learning including self-evaluation. • Demonstrate good communication. • Demonstrate/exhibit sensitivity to students’ feelings. • Demonstrate knowledge of facts, and an understanding of fundamental principles, ideas, and relationships among various domains. • Demonstrate knowledge of past and present developmental issues, research, and social influences in field education. Objectives Specific to the Course: • Emphasize higher order, critical thinking. • Strive to develop student’s intellectual, social, ethical, and moral skills and behavior.2• Provide for the uniqueness of individuals, recognizing characteristics of culturally pluralistic and at-risk populations, and foster appreciation of those differences. • Design instruction to develop and utilize the cognitive processes by which pupils learn. Learning Model for the Course: Information-Processing Model Course Text: Santrock, J.W. (2007). Children. 9th edition. McGraw-Hill. Method of Instruction: Lecture, WebCT, class discussion and activities. Course Requirements and Evaluation: 1. Two short papers on journal articles (2 - 3 pages; APA format; 15 points each) 30 2. Two (2) current event topic news items about child development (5 points each) 10 3. Personal Child Development Study Paper (5-6 pages) 25 4. Participation/Class Activities 5 points per class with a total of 2 absences permitted without penalty 140 6. Three (3) separate e-mails total to professor on WebCT in response to posted questions. (5 points each) 15 7. Six (6) quizzes 15 points each 90 8. Mid-Term and Final Exam 70 points each 140 TOTAL 450 Grading Scale: 92% or above = A 84-91% = B 72-83% = C 64-71% = D Below 64% = F Due dates will be set for all work. One point shall be deducted for each calendar day that a paper or project is late. No work will be accepted after Tuesday, December 4, 2007.
