The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day SaintsCurrent Lecture 1820 Height of the 2nd Great Awakening A lot of people were converting between new religious movements and then attempting to convert their neighbors, family, friends etc. to their religion New York – western and central regions known as the Burned-Over District, referencing the highly evangelized fire raising spirit that engulfed the area Joseph Smith – 14 years old in 1820 Wondered which religious movements were true Had visions of God and Jesus Christ informing him of the fallacy of the current religious movements Joseph Smith – age 17 Became afraid that he hadn’t lived a good life and was straying from the prophecy that he’d be a religious leader Had a vision of the angel Moroni informing him of the location of the Golden Plates Eventually uses a form of divination known as the Seer stones to translate the Golden Plates into English Published the Book of Mormon in 1830 Important Texts Bible- Hebrew Bible, New Testament Book of Mormon Pearl of Great Price Doctrine and Covenants – provided mostly by Smith but also included ideas of later presidentsThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
