Discussion on Louis Sullivan “The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered”- He starts with the design of office buildings and the development of elevators- Called the “Father of Modern Skyscrapers” - “how to make big business beautifully”; Tries to bring art into construction- Sees the glory in office buildings and how there are new functional elements needed- Defined the different levels on a typical office buildingi. 1st floor- underground; basement; where the heating, power, etc are storedii. Ground floor- entrance and exits; for shops, banks, etciii. 3rd floor- subdivided by structural cloumnsiv. 4th floor- where the offices are located; free planv. top floor- attic; where the pimps, plumbing, elevator mechanics; circulation- Examples: Wainwright Building in St. Louis; designed by L. Sullivan- Column- vertical; makes the building visionly go up; continuous i. Example: Guaranity Building at Buffalo, New York- Actually no function to windows but adds them for circulation purposes- Stresses the importance of function and form- New technology in the 1890: steel frames, elevators, inset windows- Decorative cornices at the tops of the buildings- Schlesinger and Mayer Store; located in Chicago, ILi.
