CCI 150 1st Edition Lecture 15Outline of Last Lecture I. Radio Continued II. Television as MediaOutline of Current Lecture I. Television as Media ContinuedII. The InternetCurrent LectureI. Television as Media Continued1.) Early Television: - Took its formats and programming from radio- Broadcasts were “live TV” from New York- Heavy NY influence in earliest years- Example: video of early game show from 1953-Watch for sophistication unlike modern shows-Based in New York, like most networks-Watch for single-sponsor advertising-Show is called ‘What’s my Line”-*In the earliest era of television, most tv shows had a single sponsor, so only one advertiser. The advertiser almost owned their own show.- Money / Power / technology caused change- Shift from New York to California brought about by one very powerful couple.- Ex: History Channel video about early TV and one influential show.-Listen for reach/ impact of show (First TV show to reach 10 million American households. There were fewer than 20 million tv sets in America at that time.)-How it shifted to California-How it invented the re-run-Listen for the word ‘Kinescope’ (Something that is just filming what the TV screen was playing. Pretty much our only record of early tv.)-It was filmed (not live). Invented “modern television”.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- *I LOVE LUCY*2.) Modern Television:- Dual Structure system: network and local affiliates for traditional broadcast TV- Affiliation means better programming and a share in national ad revenue – sometimes.- Network/ Affiliate relations – they need each other,- Tv also affected by bad economy and by competition from web. - New competition arising:-YouTube, Hulu, Netflix- type content providers-Apple TV, Roku, Google Chromecast and other ‘Streaming boxes”- Original Content from these upstarts – like ‘House of Cards” only through Netflix.- Rising cable/satellite bills causing viewers to weigh options- How do we know who watched what? It’s getting harder to measure this.II. The Internet 1.) How the internet began:- The Military in 1969 – A cold war development.- Text only- Mostly Military, universities and researchers- Internet vs. the World Wide Web was created in 1989 (not the same thing)-Anything you do online is the internet.-But the world wide web is just what you do through your browser. -Ex: Using your gaming system connects you to others and this is the internet or checking your email (outlook) without using your browser is also the internet without using the world wide web. - Critical mass of users by 1995, but needed ISP( Internet Service Provider – earliest ISP is dial up)-This means that there were enough people to make the world wide web ‘a thing’. It wasn’t just a fad and it was here to stay. Lead to organizations making the decision to have an online presences. - Early ISPs – CompuServe and America Online AOL2.) Sir Tim Berners Lee – The world at your fingertips on any computer platform.- In 1989 he invented the World Wide Web, and internet based hypermedia initiative for global information sharing. His specifications of URLs, HTTP and HTML were refined as Web technology spread. He could’ve been richer than bill gates, but he thought it was something that should be open to everyone and didn’t patent it and try to sell
