Decision “Derailers”Current LectureNike slogan – “winning takes care of everything” – not an example of social responsibility – endorses Tiger Woods – kids will look up to him as a role modelThis weekend, Tiger Woods violated a golf rule – should have been disqualified but wasn’t, should have withdrawn but didn’tIdeally, to make good decisions about critical decisions, we need all the facts, a knowledge of the stakeholders, and a way to properly apply these components to the decision“derailers” of making decisions:-winging it – not being prepared and knowledgeable-don’t know where you want to go (in life, in a project, in a career – a “personal mission statement” – use it to evaluate decisions – does the decision help you reach your goal?-not being calm – need a “game plan” made before a crisis appears – think about what could happen and plan ahead – don’t panic; get someone else’s perspective-letting peer pressure affect you – choose carefully who is in your circle of close friends and people who advise you; continue to evaluate them regularly-letting pride interfere – ask someone if I’m missing something (personal bias)-feeling invincible – making stupid decisions on a whim – common among professional athletes-fatigue – you don’t make good decisions when you’re tired – Bill Gates takes 2 days (?) per year to just get away, no one knows where he is, he just thinks, plans, and rests-accidentally becoming a
