How does IDEA define communication disorders? i. not speaking, or when trying to communicate, people cannot understand what you're saying.ii. Speech and language are the 2 categories of communication disorders. (SLP)b. Effects of communication disorders: Language problems can be in the receptive area (receiving language and something is going wrong), or expressive (producing language and something is going wrong)c. Associated challenges of CDs: children may not be understanding, cannot clearly understand you, or clearly communicate to you that they are or are not understanding. This can affect children's social interactions too (ex- children with autism have CDs and don't always express themselves like their peers might). d. Students have CDs often in conjunction with other disabilities such as autism.e. When you have kids with a speech IEP, you'll probably be asked to reinforce their speech therapy in your classroom. The few hours they have each week with their speech therapist is not enough.f. When is it important for us as educators to know the cause as a problem? --what triggers it and impacts it that will also have an effect on their learning or the classroom. We want to be able to reduce anxiety and tension in our class. We know how important communication is and that it will impact their social interactions and the classroom, we want to help the students and reduce stress in the classroom. g. Ms. Lewis is very concerned about Charlotte who she wants to refer for speech therapy. She has noticed a substitution pattern of sounds; Charlotte will say “axe” These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. This is a very common dialect, particularly in African American backgrounds. This is also relative to which region of the US you are in. III. Autism: a.
