Discrimination and prejudicea. Stereotypes= A belief about the dominant personal attributes of a group of peopleb. Prejudice=An unjustifiable negative attitude toward a group and its individual membersi. Includes treating others as interchangeable examples of their group and social identity. No consideration for individuality.ii. 3 main types1. Sexism= An individuals prejudiced attitudes towards a given sexThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Modern Racism= People endorse more indirect expressions of prejudicei. Old fashioned racism was more of direct laws or insultsb. People’s conscious attitudes and unconscious attitudes may diverge. People may have an automatic negative associationi. Implicit association test= Tests how quick one is to associate certain words with positive or negative words. For example black with bad/good.c. Prejudice tends to linger in intimate domainsi. For example, you would be okay sitting by someone of an out-group but not marrying themd. Prejudice still shows up in many subtle formsi. Ex: Car costs, health costs, and racial profilinge. Prejudice still shows up in how ambiguous stimuli are perceivedi. Ex: Whites are mostly likely to identify a black person holding an ambiguous object to be a gunf. Faceism= Ads more often show men’s face and women’s complete
