Shaquille PowellPhysiology LabAdam24 September 2014Pre-Lab1) If you increase the frequency of the shocks enough, you will find that though the muscle contracts, it does not fully relax between electrical shocks. Why does it not fully relax? a. The muscle contracts and the fully relaxes only when the frequency is low.“One of the key variables is the frequency at which the electrical stimulation takes place.”2) Would you say the anesthesia causes the Ryanodine Receptor to open and allow calcium to move into the cell or that the anesthesia caused the Ryanodine Receptor to remain abnormally closed, preventing calcium from moving into the cell?a. I believe that the anesthesia caused the Ryanodine Receptor to remain abnormally closed, preventing calcium from moving into the cell. As mentioned in the prewrite there is a disease where there is a defect in the sarcoplasmic reticulum protein that releases calcium. If the calcium not being released this causes overheating and then death. The anesthesia is meant for one to be sleep. I assume it is because there is a lack of calciumentering the cell but just enough to stay alive.3) Did you prefer explanation 1 or 2 for the effect of an acetyl cholinesterase inhibitor? Why?Powell 1a. I prefer explanation 2 because acetylcholinesterase is already present. It just seemed easier to process removing something than adding it. I liked how it was worded. “Instead od 2/3 of the acetylcholine…. its only 1/3”4) What did you find most interesting in the prelab write-up?a. I found that dog’s not having antibodies to fight raccoon saliva very interesting. I never knew that.5) What did you find most confusing the prelab write-up? a. The very beginning was confusing. I could not visually put together “Nerve to Muscle” background although it was listed 1-10. It may be because I am more of a visual learner. The book helped a little bit more.Powell
