PresentationsSlide 2Expectations researchStep 2 visual aides and handouts for classWhat makes good visual aides ?Step 3 the actual presentationStep 4So what makes a good presentation – class criteriaDr. Pagell’s criteriaPresentations •Topic – as per syllabus–As noted last class if you have a better idea talk to me–I want you to do a good presentation that engages the class•Date – as per syllabus- hopefully–You will be provided significant advanced notice if this is to change – and given right of refusal.•Timing- generally first thing during class unless we have a guest speaker4 step process•Step 1: Outline with list of sources–Due a minimum of a week before presentation–Dr. Pagell will grade and provide feedback–The feedback needs to be addressed in the presentation–10% of grade•Based on quality of initial outline and response to feedback•Judged by Dr. PagellExpectations research•Thorough – 2 web sites is not research–Use the library’s resources•Unbiased- or biases understood and balanced–Sources should be credible–Should be based on empirical data not faith based management (the specialty of many consultants). •Do not be dependant only on those selling something–A problem with the web! •Use examples of actual companies are expectedStep 2 visual aides and handouts for class•2 days before the presentation you need to turn in your visual aides and a list of sources to be disseminated to class–I am assuming PowerPoint – but you do not have to use it–You do have to turn in something so the class can follow along / take notes – I will post / copy•10% of grade–Based on usefulness in terms of value add as well as usefulness in following presentation–Judged by Dr Pagell and the classWhat makes good visual aides ?Step 3 the actual presentation•Prepared material – 20 minutes–Going long is an issue – shows you are unprepared–Running short is usually a problem as well•Your job is to educate the class on the subject at hand – you are content experts and the class is going to be responsible for your information.•Question and answer – as long as it takes•75% of grade–Quality of presentation and quality of material (you need both)–Judged by Dr. Pagell and classStep 4•At the time of the presentation you need to turn in a list of 3-5 test questions from your presentation that you believe every student should now be able to answer–No guarantee I will use them – but I am going to try and use at least 1 from each presentation–I may edit them•5% of grade–Based on linkage to what you actually presented, difficulty (no BS questions please) and ability to differentiate. –Judged by Dr. PagellSo what makes a good presentation – class criteriaDr. Pagell’s criteria•Obviously you need good, relevant information•But you need to present it well which means–Practice – as a group! Some obvious problems – repetition, contradiction, being surprised, poor transitions and so on. –Speak to us: Don’t read, make eye contact, speak up, and so on–Keep audience interested–Have good visual aides–Look and act professional •Obviously cant hold you to a higher standard than I hold myself to but…–Be able to answer questions – you are expected to be experts on this
