Week 4: Lectures 5 and 6 (September 15 and 17)What are the differences between emails, memos and letters?Emails usually address a large audience in the workplace and are used when someone needs a quick response. The message in an email can be revised or modified by anyone who it is sent to.Memos are usually longer than one computer screen. The message requires careful formatting and contains detailed visuals and sensitive/ important information. They can be sent as attachments. Memos are means of communication only in one company or group of workers.Letters are usually written to one person and can be used as official documents. This is a good spot to include information relevant to the potential job that may not have fit on your resume. It should be tailored to the specific position and company you are being interviewed forand it should explain how you would fit in with the company and will help them. It is basically selling you to the prospective employer.What are some guidelines to having a strong resume? The resume should be kept as brief as possible while still including essential qualification for thejob. The format should be pleasing to the eye in an easy-to-read format that looks professional. Do not like or exaggerate when composing your resume. Your employer will expect you to be able to do what you have listed on your resume. Focus on strengths and accomplishments and list relevant work history. Your resume should never go over two pages. What are some tips for job interviews?Always come to a job interview prepared with knowledge about the company from earlier research. Bring your resume, even if they already have it. A list of references would be helpful tobring, especially if it is offered on your resume. Finally, show up early to observe the environment and dress one step above what you would expect.Week 3: Lectures 3 and 4 (September 8 and 10)Formatting of ParagraphsBegin each paragraph with a topic sentence that summarizes the paragraph altogether. Paragraphs are groups of sentences that WORK TOGETHER to produce a coherent idea, so only include relevant information. Sentences should be placed in a logical order and long paragraphs should be avoided.Watch sentence length:Long, run-on sentences are hard to read and follow.
