Working version: 19 May 2014 GEOGRAPHY 370 – Introduction to Geographic Information Summer 2014 - Galapagos Study Abroad Program Galapagos Science Center & GAIAS, San Cristobal, Galapagos Archipelago, Ecuador Instructors Steve Walsh (UNC) [email protected] Carlos Mena (USFQ) [email protected] Phil Page (UNC) [email protected] Description There is a geographic, or geospatial, component to all phenomena on the Earth. Governments, businesses, scientists, and individuals all make use of geographic information from sources as distant as satellites orbiting the earth to the cell phone in your pocket. The objective of this course is to provide a broadly based survey of geographic information and the techniques used to explore, display, and analyze this kind of data. This course will include a tailored fieldwork component, making special use of our Galapagos setting to allow students to participate in scientific geospatial data collection using remotely sensed data, global positioning systems, and other mapping techniques. Textbook (Required) Shellito, B.A. (2014). Introduction to Geospatial Technologies, 2nd edition. W.H. Freeman & Company. Course Data & Materials Throughout the course, your instructors will place course materials including data and assignments on a server hosted at the Galapagos Science Center. Prerequisites None – this is an introductory methods course, and students from all majors are welcome. However, familiarity working with Windows-based software will be very helpful, and we will utilize some very simple math here and there in class – comfort with basic algebra is a necessity. Students must also be prepared to work outside for the fieldwork activities. Student Evaluation and Course Requirements Grades for the course will be based on your work on the GIS assignments, a writing assignment, and two exams: Grade components 20% - Written assignment (short research paper or fieldwork methods/log writeup) 25% - GIS field and lab assignments 25% - Midterm exam 30% - Final exam This class will have a lighter reading load than many 300-level courses. However, this will be more than made up for by the time you will spend outside of class time working on the course assignments and with the ArcGIS tools. Understanding the operational model of the ArcGIS tools and becoming comfortable working with a variety of kinds of geographic data major goals of this class. Attendance and participation (questions are good!) in class are expected. Final grades will be assigned using the UNC plus/minus letter grade system with the following score breakdown: A = 95-100; A- = 90-94; B+ = 87-89; B = 83-86; B- = 80-82; C+ = 77-79; C = 73-76; C- = 70-72; D+ = 67-69; D = 63-66; D- = 60-62; and F < 60. Honor Code Students taking this course agree to abide by the provisions of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Honor Code.
