Lecture NotesChapter 11 SummaryThe software industry makes around 2 hundred billion dollars a yearMicrosoft generates one and a half billion dollars a month from Windows and Office aloneOpen Source Software (OSS)- where anyone can look at and potentially modify a program’s codeSoftware as a Service (SaaS)- users access a vendor’s software over the internet- Free alternatives to costly commercial codes is a huge motivator to use SaaS- Amazon claims that switching to open source was a key contributor to saving nearly $20 million- The more people that look at a program’s code, the greater the likelihood that an error will be caught and corrected- SaaS is typically much more safe and protected- Organizations that adopt SaaS might be forced into adopting new versions of their software which can increase training costs or increase the chance that a user might make an error- Transfer of data is reliant on internet speeds- Scalability allows a firm to scale from start-up to blue chip without having to significantly rewrite code- Open source is a $60 billion dollar industryStructured Query Language (SQL)- pronounced “sequel”, employed by commercial database products - Firms can pay to incorporate MySQL’s code into their own products- It is attractive to companies because it is much cheaper compared to alternativesCloud computing- difficult to define but it can be split up as 1. A software as a service where a firm subscribes to a third party software replacing service that’s delivered online and 2. Models of utility computing where an organization developes their own systems and runs the over the internet on someone else’s hardware- Cloud computing was worth $68 billion in 2010 which was 13% of global software salesHardware clouds- computing is stored on the internet and the costs are similar to a utility bill in the sense that a company only pays for the amount of processing, storage, and telecommunications that were usedThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
