Basic and Enhanced Pediatric Tools WELL CHILD REFERENCE DOCUMENT Enhanced Pediatric Tools is to provide nurses with more advanced and in depth pediatric tools that can enhance their capacity to serve children ages birth to 2l years and their families These tools build upon the foundational tools set forth in Basic Pediatric Tools As such it is recommended that mastery first be gained in the Basic before proceeding to Enhanced Pediatric Tools The purpose of the Pediatric Tools is to provide a foundation for nurses of basic tools that can be utilized when serving children ages birth to 2l years and their families Thorough knowledge and understanding of these tools will enable nursing to assess actual and potential risks that can threaten the health of children When working with childbearing families it is critical for nurses to have basic knowledge of pediatric physical social and emotional growth and development This knowledge will assist in the design of effective efficient and equitable nursing care plans that protect and promote healthy families Through these efforts nurses will continue to have an impact on preventing illness injury disability and premature death among children Basic Pediatric Tools The purpose of the Basic The purpose of the Well Child Reference Document is to provide public health and tribal community health nurses in Wisconsin an organizational framework for well child assessment tools This document catalogs the variety of standard tools that are available to nurses working with children and their families These tools are organized into two categories In utilizing any assessment tool with children and their families it is important for nurses to examine their personal and cultural assumptions about families The nurse s assessment findings need to be evaluated in the context of the family s values needs and goals for seeking services Likewise nurses need to assess their clinical knowledge and experience in determining which resources to use
