Construction Management I CNST-1361 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course offers a sampler of the entire CM program. It provides the first introduction to the principles of management, construction industry, roles and responsibilities, and an overview of common project management tools. COURSE PREREQUISITES None TEXTBOOK Construction Project Management, by Gould and Joyce, Prentice Hall. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon the completion of the course students will demonstrate the ability to: 1. Understand terminology common to the construction industry 2. Understand general principles of management 3. Understand roles and responsibilities of parties 4. Be familiar with selected planning and control tools 5. Be familiar with common safety concerns and protocol SCHEDULE OF TOPICS Week # Lecture Topic 1 Introduction 2 The Construction Industry 3 Project Participants 4 Construction Estimating` 5 Planning & Scheduling 6 Project Controls 7 Construction Procurement 8 Site Management & Administration 9 Construction Business Practices 10 Formation of a Construction Business 11 Safety & Health in Construction ACADEMIC HONESTY The instructor reserves the right to adjust letter grades, upward only, based on individual attendance and class participation if numerical grade warrants such consideration. Students who violate University rules on scholastic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course and dismissal from The University. COURSE/INSTRUCTOR EVALUATION A Start-Stop-Continue survey and a course/instructor evaluation will be conducted at the middle and the end of this semester. Any suggestions you have on improving the course, however, are welcome throughout the semester.
