Rates of sexual assault have not decline in the last 5 decadesExplanations of College Sexual Assault 1. Individual Determinants – Personal characteristics, just a bad person?2. Rape Culture – belief in “rape myths” create and environment conducive to rape. Men are naturally sexually aggressive (and their peers encourage it). Women ask for it, blaming the victim. 3. Context/Organization – Some places become dangerous because of a combination of these factors. (Universities, Frats, Bars etc.)In order to participate: heterosexual, middle class, white, American born, unmarried, childless, college age, politically/socially mainstream and interested in drinking and partying. - No non-white students among the first and second year student on the dorm floor that they studied. Partying is just a part of college life – anticipatory socialization, expected that when you go to college you party and drink alcohol excessively. (Media, peers, older siblings). You have few responsibilities other than course work Peer culture is gendered and sexualizedPartying as a way to meet men on campus. Being hit on for women is a self-esteem boost- Women need to look hot and desirable but not slutty. Being criticized either way. - “Othering” – establishing yourself as classy compared to other women. Seniors slut shaming freshman. - Men derive status from having sex with high status women. Women derive status from getting attention from high status men. Sexual danger is an unintended consequence of many university practices intended to be gender neutral. University wants to distinguish between on campus and off campus clearly in order to reduce liability when incidents do happen. Next week: Male control of fraternity
