Not everyone was Puritan but helped shape literature2. Pilgrims influenced literature in England and New World3. Important because they believed that it is important for Puritan to live simply and work hard4. Puritans feel that children need to learn how to read Bible5. 1st movement towards literacy6. The Puritan Primer- Reading book used to train children to read Bible- Old primers looked like hornbooks- Very first controlled reader books- The New England Primer- 1691, alphabet, prayers, poems, Bible teachings, biblical references with pictures- “and illustrations and woodcuts (burning of a man when there 10 children watch) “easy and pleasant’F. Book published by John Newbery- 1922- Newbery award- most distinguished publisher pervious year annually every January- English Publisher, 1713-1767, very odd, made medicines, “The Father of Children’s Literature” - 1st publisher to think of children as a consumer- “Little Pretty Pocket Book” 1744, really enjoyable- “Criss Cross” Linh Wright Perkins, really weird book- “The Renounced History of Little Goody Two Shoes, Otherwise Called Mrs. Margery Two Shoes”- lessons, sterotypes, poor girl couldn’t read/write/no manners; someone gave her shoes and inspired to become learned/good manners and pass on knowledge like “My Fair Lady”G. Later Puritan Writings- The History of Sanfod and Harry Merton- by Thomas Day, four volumes, contrasted behavior Merton- spoiled rich; Sanford- farmer, hardworker; learn ways of farmer- Elsie Dinsmore Series by Martha Finley; always crying, 26 volumes, cool writing style, pious, abnormal heroin always fainting, put on shows bursting into tears- very dramatic, popular books1. 18th century different illustrations no more woodcuts2. 19th century illustrators:a. Walter Crane- nursery rhyme/folk take books, nice borders, frame pictures around textb. Kate Greenway Book (late 1800s)- set fashion trends, bonnets, normal human illustrations, prime proper ladies, normal/traditional colors, Victorian- The Diverting History of John Gilpin- 1878, illustrations by: Randolf Caldecott, actions, movement, outdoors, animals, English countryside- Both types of awards from EnglishmenH. Begins of Modern Literature- Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm- Hans Christian Anderson- 1846, 1st fairytales- 1st English masterpiece for children, 1865- Edward Lear- nonsense alphabet, 1800s- Lewis Carol- Alice Adventures in Wonderland- Louisa May Alcott- Little Women, civil war, farm, about authors life, rejected by 1st publisher, loved it and convinced father to publish it, most popular book of all time- After civil war, children’s books in magazines (Harpers/ Atlantic) magazines for children, Harpers for young people authors were discovered by this, 20th century, get their work out there to be appreciated o Louisa O’Cott- “Little women” – not historical fiction, it was considered popular current event in 1867, based on the author’s life, originally rejected by several publishers o Tale of Peter Rabbit-1900/1901 by: Beatrix Potter- Famous English author/illustrator- 1st of many books- She never copy-wrote anything- Self published that’s why 2 dayso 1st time- own $o 2nd Warren press with color because had love with a mano Few B&W books (450 books)o 1866-1943, wealthy, protective family did not want her to marry, spent time in country/lake district, animal lovero Became sheep ranchero 18930 Peter Rabbit born in letter to Noel (son of governer)o For 12 years every Christmas, little book was publishedI. 2nd reading list:- Turn of the century librarians are cool- 1919- 1st juvenile department in US “department of books for boys and girls”- 1920- progressive nursery school unit interest in publishing more books of kids!- 1st American picture story book: Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag; B&W with smoking…; watched this movie!! Millions of Cats, all gone except ugly one and then became healthy (1928)- Iconoclast film- camera moves around the pictures, not animation- Golden 30’s of picture books:o Boom in children book publishingo Depressiong- weird!
