Debord and Godard:Current Lecture:Externalization & Colonization: Imperialism takes the form of culture, and the land that it takes becomes the land of our organs. Crary: Sleep is the one escape from colonization; because of this global capitalism we have lost (i) everyday life (ii) time for private reflection – answers demands of citizenship, what it means to be a member of society. Social as opposed to narcissistic. (iii) Any Relation to otherness. Jameson: Cultural dominant – a pervasive world from which no one is exempt. Characterized by economic interest, human activity, art, and the loss of art’s semi-autonomy. Once upon a time, art had own special place in society with freedom and margin, Crary and Jameson agree this no longer is a space for art. What we own is what we are; we are dispossessed of agency and power over time.Post Modernism in the Sphere of Art: The persuasive understanding that the autonomy of the artist and artwork is no longer credible. What was autonomy?Of the artists: expressive, subjective, inimitable – no longer applyOf the art work: “Immanent normativity” – as we look at the work the only thing we have to look at is the work because it has and displays its own definition, the piece tells you what you should get out of it. Ex. Use of the commodity, readymade, found objects, non-aesthetic spheres of the economy, recycle images. Torsion – Giovanni Anselemo – 1968, Iron Bar and Fabric: Hybridity, unevenness, brilliant simple deigns to stress that all the things we are missing are seen in nature, hand craft, etc. This picture adds power to human hand, the twisted bar shows that humans are resisting machine and that individuals in a society can fight capitalism. Debord and Godard:1) Detournement is the antithesis of quotation – Debord2) The Situationist – Debord believes that Godard just quotes things; he is part of the problem. He is an agent of reification. 3) Detournement vs.
