Police officers generally are trained to be aggressive, when they come upon a scene they are trained to take charge and solve problems quickly. This becomes an issue when they happen upon a crisis situation or a situation where there is mental illness involved. - Unnecessary force, death, guns- They key is to de-escalate the situation non aggressively State law – they can take them in to custody and then take them to a mental health hospital andnot jail. Training in prisons has drastically improved the quality of life of mentally ill inmates. There are some times issues with the system getting medications to inmates. Geographic barriers to accessing beds – some areas will only accept adults, some will only accept children. You can only get admitted to a state psychiatric hospital after a screening by a community mental health center. Commitment is the last resort, when community alternatives have failed.
