INST 210 1st Edition Lecture 9 Outline of Last Lecture I. Universal design for learning and inclusion,II. Discussion Outline of Current Lecture II. Debate,III. Discussion Current LectureInclusion-- hot topic now in special education I. Debate!A. For inclusion: Equality in the classroom, allows children not to feel segregated, feel more welcome and involved. Allows for interaction with people. i. Have an accountability teacher in the school to help teachers better know the students.ii. Develop a community to value diversity iii. Children with and without disabilities have higher expectations-- children are forced tolearned something other than motor skills. iv. Inclusion benefits students with disabilities, and students in general education are experiencing a different cultureB. Against inclusion: USC. For inclusion: inclusion allows students with special needs to grow in confidence. "Teachers working together"-- teachers do work together, having several teachers in the classroom at atime does happen and it works well. i. We as educators need to help students in whatever way they may need. Students need to know they are important and they matterii. Students with disabilities who are included in the general classroom are being prepared for life after school, for real-world activities. iii. Also benefits students who do not have disabilities, able to become more aware of others, builds self-esteemD. Against inclusion: there is a huge difference between educational research and scientific research. You must do something different for each student to help all succeed. i. Scientific research has nothing to do with helping students-- students are not objects of scientific research. ii. Students will have less one-to-one attention, students' disability needs may not be met, and those students may have trouble adapting. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.iii. We have fought for all of these services for students with disabilities. What is the point of fighting for these rights when we are just going to put those kids back into theregular classroom? There other ways to include students without taking away from education. iv. Power struggle between the teacher and the helper with the sped degree. Some sped students in the general education classroom weren’t able to keep up with the lesson, which interferes with all students and the teachers. v. Blanket educational strategies that supposedly work do not work for everyone… historically one size fits all does not work, inclusion applies to that too. E. General education students learn more tolerance, which raises all students' confidence. i. Fought for sped and now we're undoing it… teachers can't give sped students the rightattention, and students w/out disabilities will not learn so much. Can’t afford to have resources to properly take care of inclusion and help the general education students too. ii. Groups who fought against were strongest! II. Discussion!A. What are some signs that you think inclusion is working? --socialization! A student with special needs was invited to a birthday party, had never happened before. Reverse inclusion classrooms are a great option-- helps with social skills for students who wouldn’t do well in ageneral education classroom. B. What are some signs that the inclusive setting is not working? --sometimes it isn’t always best for a child to have their own aid. Students are rude to students who have an aid, less accepting. Hard to talk about it as a general education teacher, you can’t legally point out who has a disability so you have to be creative of how you address it. With academics, sometimes being in general education is more restrictive. Behavior is a whole other issue-- students with autism need extra monitoring C. How can regular educators and special educators work together? Collaboration and communication. D.How can educators include parents? Get to know the children more. Send notes home from their parents and include something positive! Even small things are so
