The differences that African Diaspora caused were language and religion. The language became different compared to their mother tongue. African Americans were typically Christian while the Africans were typically Muslim. Diaspora also deprived the African Americans of close knowledge with their ties back in Africa. Later on, he got discovered through a slave trader and got back his freedom and moved back home and continued to be a slave trader. Who was Oldudah Equiano?- He was captured with his sister at age 11 and was put onto a slave ship and was sold to many different masters. He learned from many of his different experiences and later wasable to purchase his freedom. Afterwards, he had campaigned against slavery and made an auto-biography.What was the Middle Passage?- It was the journey from Africa to the New Land on the slave ship. The conditions were horrid and many of the slaves had died due to disease, insufficient food and cramped space. Portuguese ships had lowest rates of deaths and English ships had highest rates ofdeaths. Chapter 3Who was Harry Hosier?- Was the first black Methodist preacher and was born enslaved. He was also a participantin meetings that institutionalized American Methodism. What was Richard Allen famous for?- He was the founder of the AME church and he was also the first to write down and record the first spiritual and he also founded the Free African Society of Philadelphia. Hispreaching ability helped him gain his freedom. Who is Phillis Wheatley?- She was the first African American published poet. However, she had a muffled voice due to her surroundings and what she was and was not allowed to say. She reminded her readers that Africans have full humanity and deserved freedom.Who was Jean Baptiste Du Sable?- He was a man of mixed nature, born in Haiti with a French dad and an enslaved mother. He was educated and worked with his dad as a sea captain and moved to the mainland and founded Chicago has a permanent trading post. Who was Daniel Coker?- He was one of the founders for the AME church as well as the West African Methodist church. He was also a missionary in Sierra Leone and made many pamphlets opposing slavery.Chapter 4Who was Anthony Benezet?- He organized the world’s first antislavery society in Pennsylvania. He was a white Quaker and abolitionist and believed that all men were created equal. Who was Crispus Attucks?- He was the first African American to participate and fight in an American cause and died in the Boston Massacre. Who was Prince Hall?- He was the founder of the lodge of the Freemasons. He also petitioned the Massachusetts legislature to request aid in emigrating to Africa; known as the Back to Africa movement, but the request was denied. Who was Toussaint L’ Ouverture- He led the first slave revolution in Haiti and defeated many Great Britain, Spanish and French forces. This created the second democratic country in the Americas. What was the purpose of the American Colonization Society?- Movement that wanted all free blacks to be sent back to Africa because they felt America was a place solely for white men. However, this did not happen due to the Negro Convention Movement.Who was Frederick Douglas?- He was an enslaved African American that escaped around 21 years old and was famous for his anti-slavery writing. He wrote several autobiographies and was a leader in the abolitionist movement. He was inspired by William Garrison, who wrote ‘The Liberator’. Who was John Brown?- He was a white abolitionist who believed that freedom would take bloodshed and tried to create a slave revolt in Virginia. He was known for freeing slaves and then killing their masters. He tried to take over Harper’s Ferry and seize US weaponry but he was caught by Robert E. Lee. Also participated in “Bleeding Kansas” which was a fight for popular sovereignty.Who was Sojourner Truth?- She was originally a concubine, and ended up being a Christian Pilgrim for women. Sojourner means a religious kind of wanderer. And once she was freed, she had to win her son back and ended up being the first African American to defeat a white man in court. Also was an inspiring orator. Chapter 5What was the Domestic Slave Trade?- It was the huge trade of buying and selling people. More than 1 million people of the enslaved were traded. It satisfied 2 needs: allowed the division of save owners property (to pay off debts) and workers could be sold to farmers in need of labor because agriculture was starting to boom. In general, slave prices were increasing and sales were profitable. And many owners participated in eugenic practices. How did slaves receive physical and psychological trauma?- Physical: Lack of food, lack of clothing, beatings was hard and brutal punishments when misbehaved.- Psychological: Not allowed to express anger when physical beatings were dealt to themselves or their family members. Many also suffered from post traumatic stress syndrome.
