Lecture 1, Chapter 16: Reconstruction 1863-1877 Outline of Last Lecture I. N/A Outline of Current Lecture I. What was Reconstruction? II. Booth and Johnson III. 10% Plan-Proclamations of Amnesty and Reconstruction Current Lecture What is Reconstruction? - The Civil War starts in 1861. The south (Confederates) want to secede from the union (US.) Lincoln does not want to see the country split, so they go to war with each other. - In 1863, Vicksberg and Ghettysberg (south) were won by the north. Lincoln knows the north will end up winning, so he declares Reconstruction. - Reconstruction is the period between 1863 and 1877 where the states that had seceded to the Confederacy were integrated back into the union, or United States. Booth and Johnson - John Wilkes Booth was the man who shot Lincoln in 1865. Not only did he kill Lincoln, he in turn opened the door for the next man to be president, - Andrew Johnson. He was a southern Democrat (the opposite of Lincoln) without much, if any, political experience. He was a place holder and awful president until 1869 when General Grant (north) was elected. 10% Plan-Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction - A two-step plan Lincoln proposed to help integrate the south back into the union. o 1. 10% of people registered to vote (of the respective state) had to pledge to never take up arms against the federal government again. o 2. Elected officials in that state’s capital had to scrap their constitution and write a new one abolishing slavery. - This plan never made it out of congress because they thought it was too soft.
