The Monroe DoctrineCurrent Lecture- Isis war has expanded to conducting airstrikeso Unifying people and governments in the Middle East and the world against ito Isis is not Islamico Iranian efforts to counter efforts-Saudi Arabia is participatingo International politics of confronting Isis is a lot less challenging than confronting Iraq in 2003, and will be a lot more aligned with American goalso The threat from Isis is seen as evil by a whole range of actors, making it easier to legitimate military action against Isis Not only does America agree that Isis needs to be removed but other countries even the ones that are silent, don’t want Isis to stay aroundo Going after an enemy that everyone is rallied against, you run into problems withworking with those adversaries that are now suddenly allies Hard mission for Turkey because facing a domestic politics dilemma Turkey wants Isis out but if the fight against Isis causes curds it will a pose a threat because curds have always been seen as a potential threato How will fight against Isis distribute power; will Iran be then strengthened? If Iran benefits from struggle/invasion of Isis, how will this Impact Israel, will it weaken Israel? GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Pluralistic democracyo Whole controversy around campaign financing This is a problem because of money and politics Mobilizing special interests-anyone with money & attention can sway decisions and interests- US had no national interest security to go into war with Iraq- War plays a critical role in making stateso 7 years war: 1766-1773 aka French and Indian Waro British faced problem from benefits of their victory on the war They had more territory and longer frontiers to defend Doubled their troops to 10,000 War settlement created serious demand for new revenues Turned to colonies in North America for this extra revenue- Colonists were rapidly spreading out in search of land, coming intoconflict with Native Americans on the frontiero Almost ½ of English shipping was trade with North America This economic environment motivated series of reforms to raise new revenues on colonies after 1963- Sugar Act of 1764-tax on sugar and molasses- Stamp Act of 1765- Townsend Act 1767- Tea Act of 1773o Shock of the war was altering political relationship between Britain and its colonies in North America Britain was strongest power in the world with the strongest Navy and could move troops from Europe to North America Had 50,000 troops stationed in America First Continental army had a little over 5000 troops North America turned to France when defeated because it was Britain’s rival also and North America needed the war resources that France was able to provide Declaration of Independence helped convince French that colonies were in need of their own government French needed to be convinced that colonies were committed to being separated from Great Britian before French commits itself to helping them fight the war; Declaration of Independence proved thiso French fight until colonies receive independence; neither party could agree to a separate agreement with Great Britain French build a global coalition against Britian; draw in Spain Russia build neutrality act with countries of Europe for trade purposes British recognized independence for North Americao Articles of Confederation Left the Union weak, in comparison to Confederate states Federalist papers highlighted security problems in the Articleso Grand Strategy pushed by Washington before he leaves office in 1797o Fiscal strain of American revolutionary war forces French Government to call Estates general to secure new revenueso Isolationism Weakness of US and how it will undermine a domestic coalition- Republicans moving closer to the French and Democrats moving closer to the British- Conflict in Europe can generate conflict in US among the opposing states- Monroe Doctrine (at first not called the Monroe Doctrine) by John Quincy Adamso His foreign policy thinking: strong advocate of American expansion Saw it as part of God’s plan; manifest destinyo Followed in the footsteps of Washington; didn’t involve US in things it would be difficult to extract them fromo He didn’t want to overcommit resourceso Monroe Doctrine walks a fine line between his assertiveness and carefulnesso Declared the western hemisphere to be closed from European interventiono Threat from authoritarian states US had to be more assertive in the Western hempishereo Great Britain really supported Monroe doctrine because it was in their commercial and political interests America talked big talk but didn’t have powerful enough military to truly enforce the Monroe doctrine British navy is what enforced the doctrine and kept European countries out of the Western hempisphereo Russia making claim that they have special right to predict fate of Ukraineo Imperialism in Latin America-Roosevelt corollary stretched the Monroe
