Class: PSY 211 Lecture 4Review: Outline of Current Lecture: I. Stroop project II. Starting an Experiment III. Pictorial Stroop Stroop Project  It’s hard to preform, the INCONGRUENT CONDTION relative to the congruent condition. Green “Hard to say red”  Do not do the exact opposite of this for the congruent condition Red “red” * The reason why is because the participants would just start reading the words instead of looking at the color  What did Stroop do? o He did the color patch condition  This is when there is just a box full of color  This is not the best either because there is more color in the box then on a word so the task would be able to be preformed faster therefor it wasn’t a good measure. Clicker Question: Were there sex differences in Stroop’s original study? - Yes. Men were slower. The best neutral condition would be to use a normal word with a color. o Table o Green The question you have to answer is: Where else might the stimulus for a task interfere with the response? These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Starting an Experiment 1. decide what you want to research a. you want to research interference Search: Pictorial Stroop Name the color of the picture when there is a picture instead of words. They researched this What’s happening 1. You see the stimulus 2. You automatically interpret the stimulus and id the color of the stimuli 3. You need to say blue but your attention is captured by the stimuli 4. Saying blue required you to inhibit your deployment of attention to the stimulus. Ehrtr else might the stimuls for a task interfere with the response The stimulus couls be incongruent with the response The stimulus could be emotionally evocative The difference between people Lots of reasons that people don’t all provide don’t provide the same data point We’ll assume that the difference between people are in commonA BAD IDEA First condition: farm animals Everyone does it in this order Why it’s badPeople would get better at it for no purpose other then they have practiced it Independent variable (whether there is interference or not) ---------- dependent variable (reaction time)A confound is when you have some difference - Are the pic size the same for both conditions- Are you using the same colors in each condition - In what order do the subjects preform the experiment Clicker question: Do you have an experiment idea for your stroop report. What else have people done?  Snake stroop  Number stroop  Shape stroop  Compass stroop  Picture word stroop  Emotion stroop  Facial expression stroop  Attention grabbing stroop  Etc. NOTE: This is a class not a patent hearing replication isn’t necessarily a bad thing in science but no snake stroop and no color stroop anything else is fair
